This is all based on the Mayan Calendar and they accurate predictions of other events. However, as it's only 26,000 years long and we've already gone through the equivalent of this date once, i think we'll be fine.
My money would be a loose interpretation of world ending. This could be covered with a world-CHANGING event, say some new technology that heralds in the usual new era of boon technologies. At the current rate of technological advancement, i'm guessing on the date the calander ends we'll either have a full-sentient robot become active, or we'll launch some incredibly-fast new spacecraft
