Well I don't think that's how it's meant. For example if a comet hits and blows planet earth up (well basically) then yes, we're all going to die.

I don't think the world will end in 2012, but i think it may be the year that life on earth changes dramatically. I mean, in 1995 scientists were saying we have screwed the earth too much for our own good... so maybe 2012 is when it comes to a crunch.
