It's odd. The only way that consoles can even begin to threaten PCs as an entertainment platform is by becoming more like a PC themselves. Internet connectivity, online multiplay, downloadable content. I think within a generation or two, consoles will allow people to mod games just as if it were a PC game. Or even, capitalise on the multi-platform releases that are becoming commonplace and letting mods for PC games run on their console ports.
Hmm. Well, do you know why consoles are more like PC's now adays? Not everybody is as techie savy as you or me, so people aren't that keen on trying to get things to work on PC's, so the next option is the console. Put disc in console, and it runs. That's it.
PC gaming is flaky because if you don't have the required specs (or a $3000 machine that could run everything, but probably won't), you won't run the game properly or the game will be slow or it's not compatible with the hardware or there's not enough RAM or there's not enough HDD space...and the list goes on...
