1. I'm anti Sony. so i'd pick HD-DVD
2. I think I like LCD better. Plasma's are brighter but also warmer.

I still like CRT's better than the flat screen technologies out there.

There was meant to be another TV display technology coming called SED. That was gonna be cheaper and better than LCD and Plasma. I haven't heard any new developments on it though

Well, from what i've heard, quality wise hd-dvd and blu-ray are identical. I would still go for HD-DVD because Sony is just purely a rip off.

As for which screen, I couldn't tell you that one, simply because I don't have one. All I know is that to notice the difference with any of these new movienformats, the screens must be big!

Blu-ray simply because I have a PS3 & I prefer LCD

Sony is no worse than Microsoft when it comes to ripping people off, its a case of Better The Devil You Know.

I don't believe that one. Simply because I look at the price of the 360 and PS3. That's proof enough that Sony are more so, out to get people!

I've always noticed everything that sony brings out, always happens to be just that little more expensive than other brands.

If you were to buy a 360 with all the options , the cost is about the same as a PS3 , the standard 360 does not measure up to the PS3 , so buy a standard 360 , add your HD-DVD option & whatever else it doesnt come with that the PS3 does & you have a $1000 console.

The thread wasnt about consoles , its about Blu-ray vs HD-DVD & LCD vs Plasma , the only reason I meantioned PS3 is thats my Blu-ray player , I wouldnt buy a stand alone Blu-ray at the moment.

standalones are not even worth it! like $1200 or more... (last time i could be bothered to check)
i'd get HD-DVD, because its a DVD, which is a format i know about, dont know anything about blue-ray....
LCD! plasmas look tacky if there small screen, but if i go UBER big screen, then i'd go plasma, there cheaper in comparison of large size to LCD, and they look a little better

it doesn't have to be that big, i have a 32" and i can easily tell

i prefer HD-DVD because 1. it's the same technology as DVD so there would be minimal eras and 2. because Bluray had problems

also i prefer plasma for movies and LCD for games, but LCD for HD movies because i haven't used them on my plasma yet

blu ray isn't DVD, it's completely different technology, that's why it's not called BVD or BDVD

there's really not many movies for both formats. Although, again, blu ray are more expensive for their movies compared to HD-DVD.

Apparently, i just remembered, blu ray is great for special features of movies. Personally, I can't stand that s**t.

Funny how you say there aint alot of blu-ray movies out, Ive only ever seen blu-ray for sale in shops , never seen a HD-DVD except on the internet.

EDIT: The Blu-ray format has received broad support from the major movie studios as a successor to today's DVD format. Seven of the eight major movie studios (Warner, Paramount, Fox, Disney, Sony, MGM and Lionsgate) have released titles for Blu-ray, whereas HD-DVD only has support from three major movie studios (Warner, Paramount and Universal). This is an important difference because some of the studios might only support one of the formats, so you won't be able to get your favorite movies in the other format. Choosing the format with the most content support minimizes this risk. source www.blu-ray.com/

Blu Ray and LCD.
I like HD as well but hope that Blu Ray has more future potential so it gets my vote...only by a slim margin though.
I love LCD over plasma, to my eyes Plasma seems a bit pixelated unless you sit really far away.

lol funny you posted it here to be unbias and so far just about everyone has voted their way due to the system they love or hate.

I'm still deciding about Blu-Ray v HD-DVD. Although with studios pulling out of supporting Blu-Ray it may end up going the way of Beta-Max.

TVs - LCD. Better environmentally than Plasma and cheaper to run since it doesn't need to run so hot.

Got some proof of that ?

Seven of the eight major movie studios (Warner, Paramount, Fox, Disney, Sony, MGM and Lionsgate) have released titles for Blu-ray, whereas HD-DVD only has support from three major movie studios (Warner, Paramount and Universal), so the only studio that deals with HD-DVD exclusively is Universal. EDIT: Further searching of the web & I found that Paramount is now also exclusive to HD-DVD. Its a war that needs to end really. It should be noted to that Paramount only went exclusive when paid 150 million by MS

Heres a interesting article on why Blu-ray might win over HD-DVD, scroll down page a bit to get to the article. www.macworld.com/

Fair point but its an early stage of format war. Your decision will sway the studios choices. If you want HDDVD to win, you should go HD DVD. If you like blue ray, then support it.

IMO Sony used to be about innovation, research and quality. That is why you paid more. Now you pay more so that they can invest that technology research into DRM and other ways to treat you like a crim.

Price aside, the only real difference between HD DVD and Blu Ray is capacity. Call me simple, but to me it's a no brainer. And yes I know they have made the 51gb Triple layer HD DVD but then of course, if they made a triple layer Blu Ray once again its capacity exceeds the HD DVD. Sure it's a simple way to look at it, but it's the easiest difference to spot.

Doesn't one of the formats hold a larger amount of data?

A single layer HD-DVD holds 15gb , a single layer Blu-ray holds 25gb.

I think there are other things to consider. Longevity, cost, useabiliity (eg. ease of transfer to other devices/formats), compatibility, reliability, stability.

Given the way DVD's and burners have gone, these two figures are all we need to know. Dual layer and triple layer will probably never take off, like dual layer dvd's...
