Oh come on. This is the RPG by which all other RPGs are compared. When a reviewer writes about, say Diablo, he might say, "[Game] this ain't." Because Diablo sucks so bad compared to this.

Really obvious hint, then: this game has been in development for over a decade. All staff working on it have only communicated over the internet.

It is Nethack, the game with the longest active development time, mediated entirely over the internet. It is a variant of Rogue, and features both ASCII tiles and image tiles. The game also presents a level of cause and effect impossible in modern games. Touching a c0ckatrice turns you to stone, but wearing gloves lets you wield the c0ckatrice corpse as a weapon, to turn your enemies into stone. However, if you are overencumbered there's a chance you'll trip when descending the stairs to the next level, fall on the corpse and be petrified. Lots and lots of things like that.
