Wii Hardware \ Suspicious of Nintendo's 'kid/casual gamer' claim

bylim5 says:

Nintendo is limiting itself by stating its for kid/casual gamers.

Nintendo has been going on how the company is mainly tapping into the kid/casual gamer market, especially in response to many critics such as Microsoft and Sony saying its too childish (generally). It has justified its new control scheme, its low graphics upgrade, low sound upgrade, low multimedia upgrade to state that its mainly as a fun console. But how much ‘fun’ can people handle?

What I think what Nintendo is doing may be quite dangerous.

Let’s get something straight, although we love to view each console all by itself, in its independent state. It is fact (even for ALL things in life) that NOTHING cannot be analysed without some sort of external comparison or benchmark. The Wii console cannot define itself without its competition. For example, how would we know that the wiimote is flexible and revolutionary without comparing it to wire-driven, big X-box or PS3 controllers? OR how could we say that play station sucks without any proof if there’s nothing better to challenge it?
As long as Nintendo is in the gaming market, it will always have this shadow as with any console out there.

Nintendo did not pay consideration to upgrade its graphics considerably; it has already been viewed as ‘outdated’. Besides Nintendo rejecting graphics are important, the video game industry has grown considerably and is going to eventually be some sort of alternate, virtural rea

...virtural reality. Like a movie, Sound, images and dialogue all play a part in entertaining us because of its aim is to INVOLVE people as much as possible in its action or emotion. Xbox and Playstation are pushing the limits, making these alternate realities more realistic.

The Xbox and Playstation consoles are not just for ‘play’. As we can see in the rise of modern technology, everything is being implemented into one system. We love convenience where everything is ‘packed into one’.

Lately, Nintendo have been trying to stretch its boundaries and I am extremely suspicious about Nintendo’s claim that its audience are for casual gamers. Rather, I am very certain that Nintendo’s objective is to provide for a variety of players (which may be another name for the ‘casual’ gamer) which makes you consider why Nintendo has actively pursued something as extreme as Manhunt 2 or Godfather. Why the considerations for a DVD drive?

Relying on price and ‘fun’ mini games are good. But are they short term?

Expectations are growing… and Nintendo seems to be evolving to match market demands

I think the 'kid/casual gamer' claim is rubbish and is only a way to separate itself from competition and hopefully dragging casual gamers into its market. but remember, 'casual' gamers are like swing voters. They're pragmatists. As long as Nintendo is confined to the lower-aged market, it will gain new audiences, but lose them to

lose them to other companies. I think the best way is to hold on to gamers by spreading its audience, like the PS2.

Before everyone goes ballistic at me. I do reckon Nintendo is (still) a very conservative company. It is still on the learning curve but its success and its uniqueness show that its growing faster and faster and we will all support Nintendo, for our $400+ sake

I want adult games for the Wii. There's no point in shutting out the hardcore gamers for short lived games. Let's face it, casual/new gamers aren't going to be sitting there playing games for very long. I think Nintendo need to cater to the heavier/hardcore gamer a little more than they are.

Who here is sick of seeing "Movie" games coming out for the Wii?

Especially Animated kiddie movies that were a flop!

Nintendo is already hugely successful with the Wii and the DS, more than they even expected it to be. It seems that the kids/casual gamer market they have tapped into is highly profitable. I really don't think Nintendo has limited themselves because of this. Obviously they are not suffering from lack of consumer support.

From the start, Nintendo's motto has always been about fun and enjoyment. They have never swayed from this philosophy. Even after the failure of the Gamecube, Nintendo continues to promote the same culture. I don't think they will change their formula anytime soon.

I'm sure that next year we will see a lot more games that appeal to the mature audience.

BTW, how many adults fans do you think Nintendo has?
Millions.
Nintendo has no problems with the adult market.

If you want to play more adult-oriented games, then get a 360 or PS3 as a second console.

I have a 360, mate. It would just be nice to get a little more use out of my Wii.

By the way, gamecube was not a failure. And I know i'm not alone when I say this...

Yes I agree with you there that the gamecube was not a "failure" from the gamers point of view (i have a gamecube). It was a failure terms of commercial success compared to the competition - the Playstation 2 (which was a serious "hardcore" console). You'd think that after the Gamecube, Nintendo would move onto a more serious gaming console with games that are not so "kiddie" oriented. I certainly expected the Wii to be that, but I was disappointed.

I guess only time will tell. From what i've read, more and more software companies have been keen on the Wii, so we should see more titles than what gamecube originally offered. Personally, I really can't wait for the 1st party (Nintendo) games to come out.

Are you sure you're not just upset because you weren't allowed to have a Mii of Hitler?

Game consoles, like other products, have target markets. A jack of all trades is a master of none, so Nintendo focusing on the casual gaming market is in fact good business sense. Casual gaming is an unexploited market; the only major competition is developers who make Java games for cellphones, and that's hardly competition.

If you bought a Nintendo console expecting uncurbed, gratuitous violence, you just owned yourself big-time. Should have bought a PC instead.

I think Nintys next console will be an ultimate console that plays GCN, Wii and wii2? games aswell as all multimedia types, they have made a big profit so far so even if the Wii starts to die out and the PS3 catches it Nintendo can affort to go with a high graphicle upgrade on there next console but still have innovation and fun as the main specifications.

Well, can the Wii produce a game like Halo 2, which has a world wide fan base, online play, competitions and sponsorships up for grabs?

No, it can't.

Let's face it, if you were a serious gamer, you'd have a 360 or PS3 as your serious console, not a Wii.
