Yoshi's 'voice' was originally recorded with a record scratcher (like those used by DJs), then reversed.

EDIT: I actually have the original record scratcher sound if anyone's interested... just play it backwards.

lol I did a school 1000 word Biography on Shigeru Miyamoto so this is sorta a breeze

Mario, or Super Mario, is a video game character, created by Shigeru Miyamto, in the 1980's.
Mario first appearance in the video gaming industry was in the arcade game 'Donkey Kong' by the name of 'Jump Man' but was later renamed to Mario. Over the years Mario has developed from a small 8bit sprite to the three dimensional, polygonal model, he is today.
Mario is depicted as 155cm (which is abit of five feet) Italian plumber who once lived in Brooklyn but through a plumbing accident with his brother, Mario was transported to the magical world of the 'Mushroom Kingdom'.
Mario has appeared in more than 200 video games to date, both with starring and less significant roles. He is the mascot for Nintendo and according to the Guinness World Records he is the most recognized character in video games.
3 cheers for MARIO!

The events leading to Luigi's creation began in 1981 during the development of Donkey Kong, where designer Shigeru Miyamoto had created Mario (then known as "Jumpman") hoping that he would be able to recast the character in a variety of different roles in future games. Miyamoto had been inspired by the game Joust to create a game with a simultaneous two-player mode, which lead to his creation of the game Mario Bros. in 1983 with Mario's brother as a second playable character. In accordance with Nintendo's marketing policy of naming and promoting individual characters, the new character was given the name Luigi, which was inspired by a pizza parlor near Nintendo of America's headquarters in Redmond, Washington, called "Mario & Luigi's". Because of software constraints of the time, Luigi's first appearance was a simple palette swap of Mario designed to represent the second player. Graphically and in terms of gameplay, the characters were completely identical except for their color schemes: Mario wore blue and red while Luigi wore green and black.

The triforce also referred to as "The Golden Power" and "The Golden Triangles," it is a tangible, omnipotent holy relic created by the three goddesses of Hyrule. Imbued with their divine essences, it is the ultimate manifestation of power, wisdom, and courage in Hyrule.

Mario was not always known as Mario, in his first appearances on the arcade in Donkey Kong he was known as 'jumpman' before being named Mario. And a franchise was born. Thanks Shigeru Miyamoto who created Mario & Donkey kong!
Additional - Link appeared in 2 games which didnt appear on the nintendo console, they appeared on the CD-I... those facts are horrible and id rather not mention the titles names. They were awful games

The Star Fox series (スターフォックス, Sutā Fokkusu?) is a video game franchise published by Nintendo. The original game was a forward-scrolling 3D rail shooter. Later sequels added more directional freedom as the series progressed.

The first game in the series, developed by Argonaut Software, used the Super FX Chip to create the first accelerated 3D gaming experience on a home console. The Super FX Chip was an additional math co-processor that was built into the game pack and helped the Super Famicom and SNES render the game's graphics. The Super FX Chip has been used in other Super Famicom/SNES games as well, some with increased processing speed. Its sequel, Star Fox 64, further revolutionized the video game industry by being the first Nintendo 64 game to feature the Rumble Pak.

Mario
mario's shame:
To no one's great surprise the consoles of the day were woefully unable to represent Mario in the proper glory. The Intellivision abomination is the worst offender, followed by Atari's distorted versions. Surprisingly the Colecovision nailed it perfectly, and the Commodore 64 version wasn't far behind.

From Left:

It all started...
(note: parts of this article appeared in Nintendo Official Magazine UK, Sept. '04 issue)

Back in the day Nintendo was constrained by hardware. It's a well known story that when creating Mario - originally called simply 'jumpman' - Shigeru Miyamoto made him look the way he does because of hardware limitations of the time. He was given a mustache to seperate his nose from his face, overalls so arm movements were visible, and a hat because hair was hard to draw.

Super Mario Bros 2 first introduced us to a radically different looking plumber. Softer, rounder, with more personality owing in part to the graphics power of the NES and the growing experience of Nintendo's artists.

Sadly Nintendo pushed too far. In much the same way that early 3D games running on underpowered hardware produced hideous looking graphics (see: 3DO, Jaguar, SegaCD) Nintendo's use of pre-rendered sprites is running the risk of killing what charm Mario held as a lovingly hand-drawn sprite.

In order to maximize the value of new artwork created for new games, characters like Mario are first drawn in 3D. This is the only time consuming part. Afterward the 3D model can be manipulated and posed in infinite variety and 2D sprites created in rapid-fire, assembly line fashion. In addition the same 3D model can be used in a sequel, and in 3D games with few or no changes. While it's faster than drawing each frame of animation by hand, the results are usually disappointing, and often very ugly.

Instead of pure colours and clearly defined edges, Mario now has a blotchy appearance - a result of reducing the number of colours in the 3D model. Instead of clear edges Mario's now saddled with aliased fringes, usually black, resulting in the kind of blue-screen border seen in old movies.

There are no signs Nintendo plans to change their ways. The fourth Mario on the right is unclear compared to every other, including the first one made more than twenty years ago. It's a shame that Nintendo, home to some of the world's finest 2D animators, is taking the quick way out and producing these ugly graphics. Many people consider 2D animation to be superior in many respects to the 3D graphics prevalent in modern games. If Nintendo keeps squandering their position as standard-bearer for this declining art form it will lead only to less joyous times for us all.

Link is of Hylian descent, not Kokiri which was first believed by all of the people in his village, it was unknown to him until the age of seven when he didn't stop aging like the rest of the Kokiri people.

Ice Climber:

It’s a little-known fact that the Japanese version of Ice Climber featured a seal as one of the standard enemies. Nintendo changed the seals to a nondescript yeti-like creature called a Topi to avoid animal cruelty issues. This change was also implemented when Ice Climber hit the Famicom Disc System. The seals made a return in the Icicle Mountain adventure stage and as trophies when Super Smash Bros. Melee hit Japan, but versions of the game in other regions kept the Topi enemy and trophy.
