Wii Hardware \ New DVD Drive, Your thoughts?

JackAz says:

By now, we all know that the new consoles will be sporting a new DVD drive, with points removed that render current chips useless on them.

For those unaware, read up here: www.reghardware.co.uk/

Now, what does this mean?
The most likely scenarios would be:

A) The points will be relocated elsewhere on the mainboard, or the chips with missing pins replaced.

B) New chips created, still DVD Rom based, but using other points.etc.

or my personal favourite.

C) New chips, Motherboard based.

Now, DVD mods are not even close to what Motherboard mods are capable of; Homebrew.

The production of new drives is not an issue for me, I have a v1 drive. But; if Motherboard mods were to become a reality it would be a bonus for everyone with a console - whether you support modchips or not.

I'm just curious as to what you guys think.

If anyone even mentions 'Modchips are illegal!!!111oneoneone' or the like, It will be reported to the closest Admin. Thanks.

dsreaper says:

At this stage I'm thinking B.
Similar to the swap magic on the PS2, when the silver slimline came out they just tweaked what they had to suit.

Motherboard would be cool for some homebrew but they'd increase the detectability of the chip and that's when Nintendo could spike consoles (like MS).

What do you think JackAz?

JackAz says:

I would aim for C, if I had a second console.
B for the meantime, until then when Wii #2 comes along.

Nah lol. Well, I believe Ninty are dick tards for making a whole new version of the Wii just to get rid of the effective use of modchips and to incorporate DVD drives into the system.. It disadvantages those who were loyal enough to Ninty in the first place, as those who bought and supported it from day 1. It is very possilbe to have an update that allows the use of DVD's in the Wii, but Ninty would see that as unprofitable now, wouldnt they?

Hopefully they don't pull a Sony and roll out their own format. Sorry wait, Sony did that Twice.

UMD Movies? Flop.
Bluray? Soon to be the biggest flop.

Yeah this may be true. But what about those who have already paid for the chip + the installation?

Ninty are making all the wrong turns... I know that it is obviously an issue about people modding their Wii's to pirate games, but the whole thing with remodeling the Wii is stupid.

It's just a hardware revision. The thing will run in exactly the same way. If WiiKey makes a new version of their chip for altered Wiis, it will probabaly do the same thing and probably share the same software as the DVD-hack version.

What does not having those three soldering points do?
THey would be quite easy for someone with limited solering experience to replace. But I do not know all that much about the chips and the alike. Please enlighten me.

That's what I'm thinking. Even though the pins have been removed, there is still solder on that board. It's pretty easy to apply a tiny bit of solder to the end of a wire and then melt that wire against the solder that's still on the board. In fact, I used to do it all the time to repair circuits in Electronics back in high school.

Well what doesnt it do think bout it 0

i think was trivk by nintendo cause team wikey xeno did indeed make game cube modchips maybe nintendo come back release wii able for while then once there bussiness in that product

is basic crazy at moment then they shut them down,

maybe this why no update yet???

also there many un used pins on the chip set have close look in picture link i gave above

also matter of replacing or joning them up is going to be hard

ive seen 3 furom memebrs try with no luck after trying 1 pin they stoped it very hard

others are saying they thinking drilling or chipping away at the chipset so exposing a little bit to solder up

ive been told on the chip theres no connections
making it as i said need cut into the chipset

yes desi theres solder on the board that would cost more to replace the part

chip set is just simple fix also the chip set doesnt have good connection were the pins were like the main board it connected to

its basicly the chip set when installed when nintendo got them manufactored for them got the machine punch out this points which normaly joined up

but yeah sum reason wii works fine still with out them connected

While I'm extremely against pirating it really ****s me that instead of making new games for my enron like investment (only the smart ones will get that) they are making large console modifications so that the small population that do mod their consoles can't...

BeNo29 says:

Im against pirating but no matter what Nintendo does someone unfortunatly will figure out a way to mod the Wii again or upgrade an old chip and its going to keep on hapening for its life spam.
And the fact the Wii is a successfull console it would be even quicker.

Stop talking crap and get to the point.
If you don't know what you're talking about (clearly you don't) don't continue to babble on about nothing of relevance.

They removed three pins from a Chip so that the solder points the mod chip connect to connect to nothing.

There.
Wasn't that easier?
