Its a simple fix from nintendo. I would think if they could stop the chip with an update they would do that rather than change something on the hardware.

Well they don't really need those 3 pins in the current wii's. So removing them is fine. Firmware changing is a bit of a no-no. More likely to srew up consoles that haven't been modded.
