Wii Hardware \ NTSC PAL Compatibility. Is There Any?

mkirsz says:

i accidentally bought some ntsc games from the states. is there anyway that i could play these on my australian wii? i have heard of some mod chips but i didnt want to go down that path if possible.

Zhaz says:

Until a company like Datel brings out a Freeloader for Wii games (Wiiloader) a mod chip is the only way you're going to be able to play NTSC Wii games on a PAL console.

phatbass82 says:

...and if you do get yourself a modchip (totally worth it), I would recommend Wii Key modchip.

mkirsz says:

does the modchip affect updates to the wii? firmware? where could i get my wii chipped and how much would it cost?

05/21/2007 Melbourne

dsreaper says:

ozmodchips.com

It won't affect firmware and updates.
it will cost $100.
You pay $45 for the chip and $55 in person to the installer.

I got my chip done with these guys, they're really helpful and very professional.

I highly recommend them.

edit: If you want to ask anything feel free to PM me, if you want to know about installers etc shoot ozmodchips an email.

mkirsz says:

Has anyone had any problems with modchips on the wii? can you still use virtual console and everything else as per normal?

05/21/2007 Melbourne

phatbass82 says:

Everything is normal...you will not notice any difference with the operation of the Wii, except obviously the fact you are playing import and backup games.

$100 is the usual price for modchip + labor. Should only take a few hours to install, not like one post I've seen on here where it took 7 days, unless you're posting it away...

Once you get the chip installed, make sure that your Wii is always up-to-date before running all imported games (take Super Paper Mario for example - common problem of bricking Wii's because people aren't updating). I have Wii key and imported Super Paper Mario and it works perfectly...just to give you a little more information

mkirsz says:

so these games that i have purchased from the us should work on a mod system then?

05/21/2007 Melbourne

dsreaper says:

The only problem anyone has encountered is vote channel has broken but I believe it can be fixed...I didn't bother it's lame.

No bricks what so ever, professional installers are just that and they do it with such ease...mine was a work of art, so clean.

They will work 100% guarantee, except if you have Naruto, it's not compatable with all Japanese games yet, as I found out first hand (should be fixed next Wiikey update).

edit: sorry for the double post.

so there is software that i can update as well. i am new to this and the last nintendo i owned was a super nintendo so sorry for the thousand and one questions. i have to say though the wii is unbelievable.

05/21/2007 Melbourne

dsreaper says:

My vote channel said there was 100 days left on polls and never changes.
I think it's because the battery is removed when opening the case.
I redownloaded and it didn't work, but if you delete the save file on the Wii as well it should work.

no problem mate, there's no stupid questions, better than making a stupid mistake!
Yes there is, Wiikey have a configuration file that you run on the Wii when you want to change settings and backup disks.
At the moment they don't update the chip firmware but the next update should have this feature (coming really soon).
Their site is www.wiikey.cn there is a clone site wiikey.com.cn so STAY AWAY from them, they only sell fake chips.

It's all good, that's what these forum's are for.

Now, you games, here is a website/link that you should look at, it tells you what games will be compatible once you get your chip installed:

wiki.gbatemp.net/

With the Wiikey, there is a chip update which is coming very soon, this will fix problems, probably with NTSC compatibility. This is totally different to the boot disc that dsreaper mentioned.

dsreaper: Wow, I've gotta check mine again...that can't be good.

dsreaper says:

haha I don't use it so I wasn't worried.
If it is broken, if you delete the channel and delete any vote channel data in the system memory it should work again after you redownload.

This is caused from removing the battery, you know how it reset the date and time...the vote channel doesn't reset and freaks out instead lol.

just had a quick look at the wiki site. it says that tmnt works with vortex in brackets but marvell alliance and zelda are in red. is this saying they dont work without mod chips.

What they are saying is that the ones in green work and the ones in red don't work. You must have a modchip to begin with, though.

Exactly what games do you have that are NTSC?

mkirsz says:

so the main reason for a modchip is so you can get the latest games and also at a cheaper price?

05/21/2007 Melbourne

mkirsz says:

I purchased Zelda, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Marvell Alliance. At around $50 each brand new. Has anyone had problems with these?

phatbass82 says:

Yes, plus the ability to play the backups of the games you already have.

We are left behind in Australia in terms of games, so buying them from America is the next best thing, plus they are a good $20-$30 cheaper which I love. I've spoken with americans over xbox live and told them how much we pay and they feel sorry for us...

I bought PAL Zelda and Marvel, don't have TMNT so i'm not sure.
I'm pretty sure that the only games giving anyone problems are Japanese (like my copy of Naruto).

mkirsz says:

so i am assuming that people are downloading backup copies of games from the net and playing them on their wii's? like xbox and ps.
