dsreaper says:

I'm doing mine Saturday, some ppl have already.
They allow you to play imported games (or downloaded/backups).

Installing a chip in Aus is legal but voids the warranty.
Downloading games is illegal everywhere.
Importing is legal (of course) but some games may not be 100% compatible.

I'm chipping mine so I can import from the US and skip the waiting periods...plus it's a bit cheaper.

dsreaper says:

The Wiikey has stealth mode, so it wont be detected when turned on.
That doesn't mean it can't screw up but it reduces the risk Nintendo will find a way to break it (with net access etc.)

ghettofool says:

where do you go to get it done?

N00B ALERT.

It won't stuff up your online.
The mod is completely un-detectable.
WiiKey have confirmed this.

I'm sure Nintendo won't bother to try and find a way to detect it.

Mmm... Sarcasm is hard to show over the internet.

Chud says:

I have a legitimate question about modding game consoles. But first, I must say that I understand it is legal; however, the question I will pose is... Is it ethical. Now, hear me out, if people mod their console and purchase games, accessories etc from overseas. Won't that simply raise prices of games and accessories sold locally. It's simple economics.

I will also make a comparison to the whole Napstar debacle. If Australian retailers stop selling games from local organisations, these businesses will stop making a profit, and then go bust. This could then pass to other larger companies before they drastically raise their prices due to monopolising the industry.

I know that this is an over the top scenario, and I know that it is frustrating waiting to buy good games. But as a whole, is it worth saving a little extra in the short term, or to receive saving later down the track?

Just a thought.

KeisukeFD says:

actually, modding has a short term loss and a long term gain for consumers.

Short term loss is that you lose the $100 or so you spend on getting the chip.

Long term is you will always be able to get games overseas, why is that a gain? because as someone who imports on a semi-regular basis, I can tell you that $100 AUD games here, cost about $60 AUD overseas, including shipping. So within 2 or 3 games, I've recuperated my loss for modding.

Now about the economy, it's not so simple. This is really a chicken and the egg scenario. The gaming industry say that if people bought it here, they'd make more and be able to sell games for less. The people who pirate games claim that it'll never happen, because in the history of gaming, back in a time when pirating did not have such a massive impact, there was no reduction in prices due to game companies making massive profits, reductions came because the companies had already sucked all the potential profits at the original price, reduced prices were just to target the potential buyers (case in point: Sony's Platinum games, only games that sell 1 million go platinum, that's basically the amount of consoles that were already in our homes back then).
No side is willing to budge, like the chicken and the egg, did the lack of price decreasing cause pirating to occur or is it because of pirates that the prices won't change? Therefore, are you, a potential consumer, willing to buy from these producers at

full price, in the hopes of a potential future decrease? or would you rather buy overseas and be guaranteed savings?

I'm not saying that the game industry or the pirates are right by the way. I'd love to see game producers lower the price of games, and I'd gladly buy here if they were legally bound to reduce game prices. But they're not, and the pessimist in me says it ain't happening

kojiro says:

people like us (who know about cost cutting by importing) are a small minority of the millions of mums who bought a wii for their kids simply because it's cheap.

In the ten days since PS3 was released in australia:
22,000 PS3 sold.
66,000 wii sold. There wouldn't even be 60,000 mod chipped wii's in australia.

NJamma580 says:

tell me then... american modchips are available, but from what it sounds like u guys mod ur wiis just to get games from other countries...so is it basically pointless to mod mine b/c i live here anyways? i read up and someone mentioned that their SNES emulation works on their wii...which means the whole VC thing is useless, b/c u can just put games for free on ur nintendo free of charge....i understand what they do....just dont know if its worth my money to mod mine over here in the US...a.ny opinions?
