I'm not 100% sure on this, but the place I import from lists games as being compatible (or not) in these formats, NTSC, NTSC-J and PAL.
I know what the difference between NTSC and NTSC-J is (America and other countries, and the other is Japan), but I'm not sure whether the Wii's in those 2 regions can play each others games. If it turns out they can't, then that might be a reason to mod, if there are some Japanese games out there that you don't think will make it into Western Countries.
So I'd find that out, otherwise it may not really be worth it.
