Wii Hardware \ Wii cooling system....

cmpa1970 says:

i`ve been considering getting one of those wii stand/cooling system. what are your opinions on it? worth the $20.00? does it draw power from wii usb? will it cool during standby/connect24? it still gets warm on standby. but not terribly so....

its $5 off now at kmart
i normally turn it off cause it stil hot if i leave it standby

03/17/2007 Sydney

RerunWii says:

yeah i tried it on standby for 24 hours since like 12 yesterday. It got way too hot so I just turn it off, leaving it on standby dosn't do that much anyway, I mean when yu turn it on it'll update anyway so yeah. The worst thing possible from not turning it off is you'll get some messages later on.

lolz wiiconnect24 is whats causing the heat. wireless applications always get very hot. should be normal and won't harm your console.

RerunWii says:

no, it's because the fan in the Console dosn't initialize when the console is in standby, it's kind of a technical fault. Ninty WILL fix it for free but it'll take weeks if you send it in so thats why I'm not sending mine in.

where did u see that they will fix it for free and where?? i get realli concerned about the heat. can u tell me where i can get it fixed plz?

desi says:

Why keep it on all the time? There are no good reasons for it yet (and probably won't be, unless the Wii gets a hard drive attachment for downloadable game levels, missions etc.) and the phantom drain on your electricity adds up, like leaving the microwave on or the radio on standby.

noobies...

i left my wii on standbay + wii connect 24 eversince the first day it came out

result?

only emitting more greenhouse gases, wii is fine.

THE WII IS BUILT FOR THIS OTHERWISE NINTENDO WOULD HAVE A BIG LAWCASE ON ITS HANDS!

how many people would complain when wii cannot even stand a week on connect24??

JUST LOOK AT ITS NAME. "24" it means, keep it on 24 hours.

geez.....

you might as well wear full padding when you walk outside incase something hits you...

don't cause ****. You do not need to call us noobies, me n des don't call u a noob so i suggest you keep quiet. And yes ninty WOULD have a law case but the said they'll fix it for free just call them up and send your console to them. It is a problem and i could fix it but just like desi said it's not that important to keep it on, it just mean you need to wait like 10 seconds when your on say the news or forecast channel.

Finally someone said it! I can't agree more. Its (the wii) standby heat is like 50° cooler than xbox360 in regular operation. hmm, I need to get the surface temperature laser thermometer from my old work and see for sure!

if yours really is hot you probably

a) have a defective wii which nintendo will fix for free (coz they're cool dudes/dudettes)
b)have a too high ambient temperature in your wii room. in my room in summer my laptop fan almost always runs when I'm using it but never runs in winter.

Since the wii has only ever been out in summer in Australia, wait and see in winter is my opinion. I'm not sure where you are in brisbane (nor do I know much of Brisbane's geography) but if you have a winter cool, I rekon your wii will be alright then.

UNLESS you have A/C running all the time (like my family DOESN'T ) in which case, see a)

telljoolz says:

Hi . This topic of the heating from wii comes up on this site every now and then.

When I first got my Wii I was concerned. Now I don't care. I make sure to take the discs out though because the heat does transfer to the discs and I am a little concerned about it.

Fact is, hot components will shorten the lifespan of a device. By how long? I don't know. The heat will also shorten the lifespan of the storage media. For how long? again i don't know.

If people thing it is negligible, good for them. They can leave it on and enable wifi 24/7. If people think it is a concern, turn it off and remove the discs.

About the cooling fan - I am concerned by this device if its the one that draws power from the unit itself, because in drawing power, I would think that would be contributing to the heat slightly. If* i was to get a cooling system, I would want it to be external dont you think?

Thats just my opinion.

well you kinda missed the point he was making a little blunt but relevant im sure it wasnt a last minute feature if it does stuff your wii up then yeah they'll replace it but im sure theres no reason to go and buy a cooling system ive left mine on standby for a good 2 months now and havent encountered a single problem

03/18/2007 Brisbane

telljoolz says:

Saying you have left it on standby for 2 months and its still ok doesnt prove its safe to leave it on for it to get hot.

I think its fair enough that you think its safe. (I do too).

But it doesn't *prove* its safe. They do get quite hot and that heat shortens the lifespan. Those who leave it on (including me) are just willing to bet that this shortening should be hopefully negligible.

My friend bought a mobile based on good reviews by many people. Unfortunately all the reviewers hadnt had their phone for long enough to discover that a design/production fault, rendered the joystick more or less unresponsive after a period of time.

Now that time has passed the forums/reviewers are all having a similar problem with the defective joystick.

See my point?

03/18/2007 Brisbane QLD

RerunWii says:

Yeah well since I don't have any friends who own a Wii I can't really compare the heat between the consoles so mine may be running the same as anyone elses but still according to my touch, if I had any other electronic devide heating up THAT much I would turn it ofd without thought so yeah mine won't be on standby mode from now on I don't think. TJ makes a very good point that the heating up of anything to that point WILL shorten the life-span of the device.....except for maybe a stove...those things are amazing that way
