95% from Australia, that's news to me. I never knew that.

I believe Australia has a lot in reserve that we are saving for a rainy day, I am finding it hard to believe that 95% of the oil comes from Australia for Australia. By the way I am not disputing this, I just have no clue.

Some people refer to past low prices like it's a valid reason why they should be exactly the same prices today. Petrol prices shouldn't have been so low back then and they won't ever be that low ever again. Not while we rely on it for private transport anyway. Plus it's this generation (ie. us) that has to deal with the bulk of these prices for our lifetimes anyway - not to mention outrageous housing prices so stop the bitching.

The price is rising for a reason: petrol is getting scarce. It's not OPEC being assholes or the government not doing enough to keep prices low (which they shouldn't be doing now anyway), it's because petrol is running out.

It's the Government's responsibility to provide better public transport and to some extent encourage accessible markets for sustainable alternatives (solar/electric cars?). The best thing consumers can do right now is to change their driving ways.

Well I don't whinge about it anyway, I pretty much do the same thing as someone else said before. Close your eyes and fill up.

We still need whingers in this world though to keep it around about fair, I'm just too lazy to whinge.

As for driving is a right, well taxes are paid so basically it is a right and a privilege. I agree with that comment somewhat but it's the people that drive on the road that are paying for the police to monitor them and for the workers to build them.

I am not a fan of over the top greenies. Fair enough I care for the environment and care to save water and yes I do my bit but there's some people out there that just want to have a whinge about every little bit.

Nope. Just a responsible, concerned private citizen. Most of the driving people do is unnecessary. I hope petrol prices go up, so lazy convenience-obsessed people will be forced to change their habits.

Lol, yep I think most people see the prices rise, cop the extra $5-$10 per tank and continue driving. That's why I'm certain prices will continue to rise, consumer behaviour isn't changing.

Yeah well you have your views. Some I agree, I just think you're a little harsh. I can ride my bike to work every day and therefore I am missing out on about 16 hours worth of pay each week (I set my own times really, and no I am not going to leave one hour earlier than the one hour earlier than I'd already be leaving to catch up). Therefore I will find it hard to pay my bills. The taxi's in Sydney are not that expensive as Canberra, there's no way I'd travel in cabs here like I did in Sydney. Also the buses here don't run all night and we don't have local trains.

I can totally agree that to go to the shops that might be a 10 minute walk away instead of driving there could be changed, that's a good point. Not everyone lives in a city with shops so close.

I think I do my bit and I am quite happy with what I do.

Not everyone lives close to the shops, but a vast, vast majority of the population does. Most people could catch the bus to work. Again, not everyone, but a vast majority. It's just that most people aren't prepared to sacrifice the time. OK, that's their prerogative, but it's a bit rich for them to moan about how expensive petrol is when they could completely avoid the issue by not driving everywhere.

Driving, and the ability to get to places quickly, is not a right. It's a privilege we've enjoyed at the expense of the environment for far too long. What we need to do now is make the necessary changes to make life easier after private transport. This means a more efficient public transport system, better planning laws, and a significant focus on high density living to make the switch to public transport easier.

It's a complex combination of failures. The people have failed to take any responsibility for the environment, the government has failed to improve transport and city structure and the entire political system has failed because we have only two political options for which to vote, and neither of them cares about long term planning.

well petrol didnt vary in my area for the last week its been 1.52cpl

so i saw no change
and aus does provide something like 95% of its own oil . but we still pay top dollar .

and theres no point complaining cause nothing can be done . even if world oil expires before aus we would sell our oil at top dollar rather than use it here

It's all very well to say people could just use public transport instead of driving, but some of us don't have the luxury of just hoping on a bus or train and getting to our destination without having to shuffle around from bus to train or tram etc. The closest train station to my house is a half hour walk, or 10 minute bus drive. Unfortunately a bus comes around something like once every 20 minutes. Now it takes me around an hour to drive into the city each morning to get to work (around 35 kms). Public transport takes me almost 2, which would involve catching a bus to the train station, train to the city, then a tram to work. Now this wouldn't be so much of a problem if these ran more frequently.
Is it too hard to have trains/buses/ trams running once every 10 minutes? Oh what's that it costs too much doesn't it. With all the billions the governments rakes in every year you'd think it could sort this crap out.
