Wii Hardware \ got component cable, doesn't look better?!

skid-row says:

I got my component cable yesterday and have plugged it in. I can't see much of a difference at all though. At the moment I'm running it in 50Hz (576i) and it looks reasonable. When I change it to 60Hz (480i) or EDTV/HDTV (480p) it is really shaky and flickers, looks crap!
What else do I need to change or tinker with to get this working?

You TV can handle 480p right?

Some TVs have a PAL/NTSC/Auto setting for determining the input frequency. Does this need to be set to 'Auto' or NTSC or suchlike?

KeepitREAL says:

You TV probably can do 480p @ 60hz which is what the wii requires, is a 576p mode possible?

Zhaz says:

Like Mercutio said, check the settings on the TV, should be set to Auto, should not be set on PAL, you will have problems if it is.

I could understand you having issues with the EDTV/HDTV setting if your TV does not support progressive scan, BUT you should not be having any issues with the 480i. Most TVs these days support 60hz.

A 576p is not possible with the Wii, nor is it possible with the Xbox 360 - it only does 480p, then 720p, 1080i, 1080p. The only thing that I have that can output at 576p is my Toshiba DVD player.

I bought the component cables and i can't get them working, i've got the inputs on the back of my vcr but when i plug them in all i get is the audio and no picture?
Can anyone help?

SkitZaY says:

Turbo: I got that when I plugged them into the back of my VCR aswell, if possible just plug them into your TV. Its probably because VCR's don't have the right channel for it to send the video to.

turbo says:

Thanks for that SkitZaY, i'll have to check my TV tomorrow, i'm not sure if it's got the right inputs on it.

skid-row says:

No I'm not running 576p... it's 576i! And yes my TV is HD and has progressive scan so it really should not be a problem. I've looked through my TV manual as it's a new TV but I can't seem to find the settings you guys speak of.
If anyone has suggestions feel free to shout 'em out

It merely depends on the game you're playing..

You may not notice a difference with Wii Sports, but you should with Zelda for an example.

What TV is it?
That would help.

What, were you expecting blindingly brilliant colour and leprechauns dancing around the screen?

Overall the output from a Component cable is much sharper. In some games that sharpness will let you see detail that never existed before: in Twilight Princess, for example, a plainly-coloured wall might actually have cracks all over it.

I just found that things are clearer and less blurry with component cables.

i noticed a little more detail and clearer picture. it really does depend on your tv as to whether you can notice it or not.

JackAz says:

The bigger the TV, the bigger the difference.
Anything under 30" and you'll barely notice a difference.

Component Cables need a compatible TV. It doesn't need to be a Plasma or LCD. I have a regular, modern TV with component input. It looks great. I don't use the 480p option, I just make sure that it's on 60Hz's. On my TV it's a little annoying because everytime I change wii channels my tv channel comes on because for some strange reason it keeps changing resolutions. But the cables do work well and the image is perfect.
