Japanese publication Famitsu revealed new story and gameplay details about Namco Bandai's Wii-exclusive entry in the Soul Calibur franchise, subtitled Legends.

Legends will follow the main character Iska, a 16-year-old newcomer to the series, as he sets out on a journey with Siegfried Schtauffen. Franchise veterans will know Siegfried as the character who later becomes Nightmare. Taki, Ivy and Mitsurugi will also be playable during the adventure, with the cast of characters expected to grow as player's progress. It's unknown if players will be able to switch between characters whenever inclined.

Legends will break away from the one-on-one arcade-like combat of past games in favor of "sword action" in the third-person perspective. Players will swing the Wii Remote either horizontally or vertically and their on-screen character will imitate the motion. The Nunchuk's analog stick will move the character; shaking the device will handle evasion and other special maneuvers. Various buttons will be assigned to jumping and guarding. The control scheme is expected to differ slightly depending on the character. Enemies will consist of past fighters from the series and new beasts.

The game's stages, of which Namco Bandai is planning "a considerable number", are expected to each take about 5-20 minutes to complete. In addition to fighting enemies and dealing with stage obstacles, players will also confront bosses. In one such battle described by Famitsu, players could switch freely between two characters in order to vanquish the boss.

Aside from the single-player quest, Legends will also feature multiplayer modes. Producer Jin Okubo noted that players can expect to battle each other or co-operatively, likely through a split-screen set-up.

According to Famitsu, Legends is currently about 40% complete and slated to release in Japan this winter.
