Blogs \ Metallic Gears, Bad Online Companies And Other Musings

Hi every one its longarms here, I’m an admin over at www.myps3.com.au/ . And we recently had our little corner of the MySites updated to include blogs. So I present to you my inaugural blog.

So as many of you may be aware “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” hit store selves last week. And as the die hard fan I am I was at my local JB hi-fi as soon as they opened in the morning to pick up my pre order. I wont go to much into detail about MGS4 (you can read my full review for that www.myps3.com.au/ ) But I’ll say this. The game is astounding, it surpassed even my high expectations and really shows what you can do with next-gen hardware coupled excellent cinematic direction and game design. Now some people may complain about the length of the cut-scenes, but for me I loved every minute of them.

Now this leads me to the one spot of contention that I have with the MGS4 package. And that is the included online game Metal Gear Online. Which originally was planned to be a separate standalone product but konami then decided to include it with MGS4. Now metal Gear online sounds great in theory, you take gameplay elements from a single player Metal Gear game and take them online with groups of people. This allows you to do crazy things such as incapacitate people with playboy magazines and jack into their SOP system to see where they are at all times. But where it all falls apart is the implementation. Unlike 99% of games on the PSN you cant use your PSN user name for MGO, Oh no no you have to sign up for a separate Konami ID account which with in that you have to set up a Game ID for MGO and each have to have a separate password.

Now as if the ridiculous sign-up procedure wasn’t enough you then have to create your character. And your only given one for “free” if you want to create other characters you have to buy more character slots. So I can deal with all that, as I can sign up for new accounts remember passwords and I only want to use one character anyway. So I finally get into a game. And it should be awesome right? Wrong, for me it was laggy buggy and over all a boring and frustrating experience. Now I always give Multiplayer games some leeway when I comes to lag and bugs as they can be fixed. So I’ll have to see how it goes In the next few weeks.

Now the other major game I’ve been playing it the Battlefield: Bad Company demo that was released on the PSN a few weeks ago. Now B:BC is really the poler opposite to MGS4. The single player part of the demo didn’t really impress me all that much. It was fun but I prefer my single players FPS’s to be more like Half Life 2 or Bioshock. But in an incredibly smart move on EA’s part they included a limited look at multiplayer in the demo.

And I’ve been absolutely loving it. It provides a much more wide open battlefield than COD4 dose with tanks, boats, jeeps, artillery pieces and helicopters all available for use. Now while all that stuff is great what really makes B:BC a unique experience is the destructibility of the environment. You can blow holes in any wall you see fit and cover never stays intact for very long. It really goes a long way to fixing the invincible walls and objects syndrome that 99% of games have.

With the demo EA has convinced me to pick up a copy of Bad Company And if the rest of the online is as good as in the demo I’ll be playing it for a long time to come. While MGO might at the moment be a complete "fission mailed" for Konami. MGS4 is an incredible piece of interactive entertainment which I suggest every one who enjoys games should try out.

So that about wraps up my first blog, and now I leave you with this rather amusing video showing the contrast between MGS4 and B:BC

I am interested in this game, was at the movies and there was a trailer of it in the previews and MGS4 looked sweet and sparked interest
