Wii Software \ Guitar hero 3 question

i know that guitar hero 3 is online for wii, but i have a few questions.

1.) can i play random people online or do i need their friendcodes?
2.) my wireless connection isnt the best, should i buy the wii LAN adapter and an ethernet cable instead for all my online gaming?

well moving my router cant be done cause its in a tight spot. and same w/ moving my wii, it cant be done. but total distance between the two is only about 15 ft.... considering there is a wall between the two lol
