Wii Software \ Is Wii a gimick

Well we are now close to 12 months lifespan on the Wii.
Who thinks the motion controls at this point of time are gimicky.
Until we get one to one ratio movement with the controls then Im afraid it will always be seen as just that.
Sure there are some very good games but the majority have been crap.
Most games that have required to do a action via some motion have been pathetic and not intuitive and would have been easier and doing with a press of a button.
I find metroid prime and resident evil to be good as shooters using the wii remote but that is using the IR and not motion sensing.
But car racing using steering wheel was crap.
Super Smash bros will not use motion sensing so the developers obviously had no confidence in it.
Anyway just thought Id put it out there as a discussion

how many consoles have had a majority of very good games? you just need to buy the good ones which would be enough games to keep me (i wouldnt be the only one) going for a long while haha ive just gotta get the money. and its only been 12 months thats really not long considering that they've been releasing the good games so slowly. the best of wii is still to come...

The greatest strength for the Wii at the moment is two things IMHO:

1. Good first party games.

2. Appeal to casual gamers due to its control scheme.

There you go.

i think the wii is a bridge that will lead to the next console. its not a gimmick at all because i see it as a step forward in couch-potato gaming. sure its not the most perfect system in the world...but neither is the george fore- i mean PS3 or the 360 even...with that damn red light...lol

the wii is very necessary in the evolution of gaming.....

and thats my two cents!!!!!!!! woot woot

Basically this argument boils down to the wii motion sensing controls are gimicky, well of course they are. If you expected any more from them then I'm afraid you need your head looking at. Anything new is "gimicky" until the technology gets figured out properly, and the first generation of motion sensing controls are only there to show you whats possible, not the end product.

The whole point of games is interaction, otherwise you may as well be watching a movie, of course it is easier to press a button than swing the remote, it always will be, but it makes the game more interactive, which is a step in the right direction. Plus realise that the wii doesn't have impossible button combinations? Why hold triangle + square + R1 + L2 and hope you timed it all right, when a simple up/down with the remote can produce the same effect?
And as for the bad games, well have you looked at the ps2/ps1/xbox games list? how many crap games were released compared to truly memorable ones? On any popular system you will get more crap than good because the crap games are easier, cheaper and faster to make.

The same argument can be said for the graphics. Sony and Microsoft cheated basically imho, in that all they had to do was repackage the same games with new graphics, no real skill involved there, for the wii, programmers have to work around a whole new control scheme as well as fit in the graphics on a system that they don't yet know the capabilities of.

After playing MP3, I wouldn't say the wiimote system is a gimmick. I'd say the six axis is more of a gimmick, and the wiimote is a core gameplay element for the wii.

I'd say the wii is yet to release a game that using motion sensing to real advantage, games like MP3 show that the wii is not a gimick and has quality games but thats due to the IR and only a little to motion sensing which is used effectively in Prime but doesn't make the game

I think all of the Nintendo games I've played have had good Wiimote controls but I have to agree that there are a lot of games where the Wiimote just doesn't work and the option for the Classic Controller should be more frequent.

Yeah I am a bit mad that Nintendo doesn't put much motion sensor into some most of there games and I'm also mad Nintendo didn't spend much time on the wii I mean there a so many problems like the TV incedent, the graphics, the memorie and quite a few other things. I think that the moition sensor is a gimick because it could of been better and some other reasons.

hmm, its hard to say regarding the games. zelda i was really impressed and shocked how involved i was, same as paper mario, it was just all-round clever. wii sports always gets you off your feet, same as warioware. its 3rd party games will use the 'gimmicks' of the wiimote features and make it look worse and less capable than it actually is.

im not backing up the wii entirely, it has a lot of flaws. but so does every other system. at the end of the day i still prefer my wii over anything else and thats all that matters to me.

Mario Galaxy - Just one example of the Wii, within it's first year.

Pre-release

Critics and fans reacted positively to the demo version.
[33] When the game was first revealed at E3 2006, it was one of the most played and enjoyed games of the show floor. Matt Casamassina, the editor of IGN Wii, loved it so much that he went on to say that the game was practically perfect.
[34] Matt Wales agreed that it was everything Super Mario Sunshine was not.
[35] Giancarlo Varanini, of 1UP.com, wrote that it was the best example of how the Wii Remote can be used.
[36] Russ Fisher appreciated the game, because it was "fresh", and compared it to the Metroid Prime series which transformed the Metroid franchise into 3D and was very successful.

I think the Wiimote has been seen as gimmicky by developers more than anything. Quality developers, like Nintendo and Capcom have realised true potential and made good games to utilise the controls well. Metroid Prime 3 is the pinnacle of these games. The controls are far better than dual-analog and the motion sensitive gestures you have to do in order to open locked doors and other things (i wont give away) are spot on and add so much more to the game. RE4 is amazing and very well done, doing just like Nintendo did with Twilight Princess, take a GC game, add much much better controls to enhance the already fantastic gameplay, then add 16:9 480p visuals to take advantage of the extra horsepower. I think from now on, especially with Metroid Prime 3 setting the standard, developers are going to start seeing the wiimote for the potential that it really has. Tony Hawk Downhill Jam is another game that has benefitted, looking far better and controlling better than the Ps2 counterpart.

i do not think that the wii is a gimmick... however, there are alot of game producers making gimmicky games for the wii... as for the IR and motion sensing issue.... who cares? the games work and are fine... SSBB is going to be awsome regaurdless of its control styles...

no ones mentioned zelda? you use the motion sensing almost constantly in that game, but it uses IR too.

i wish there was a kickass 3rd party game like zelda for Wii, i hope they end up doing this MMO thats rumoured.

I too am starting to think that the whole concept of the wii is only a gimmick with little substance in it (this is only my opinion, each to their own) due to the fact that most, if not all, of the games released so far I haven't really taken personal interest into. And games that do interest me seem to released in other consoles.

The Wii is not a gimmick, a different style of gaming does not make a system a gimmick. I admit some of the games just lately, have been poor, but things are definately looking up! The Wii-mote in most cases works wonders as a controller take for example Zelda Tp (firing arrows, sword fighting) makes the game that much more life like. If the makers of the games would put more effort into the games they are making! The potential is there.

I don't think the motion controls are a gimick, they've just been poorly utilised by most games so far. I think next year we'll see a lot more good third party games based around motion controls.
