I have mario party and trying to play 4 player when i try to select 4 player it asks to connect 2nd wii remote press it and nothing, if i go to two player it lets me use the two remotes? what and i doing wrong

Yes there both connected just it asks for a second remote if i want to play 4 players? only p1 is on the screen.
if i then go to 2 player with p1 remote the next screen has both p1 and p2 on there.
