Social \ help with pc

Hi is there anyone here that can help me solve a problem with my computer? Put simply, it won't start up, it does the loading at the start but then goes to the black screen with writing where it says to start up normally or not. I click on start up with the previous settings that was successful but it just freezes. All of the options cause my computer to freeze. When I go to the configurations I've tried to restore default settings and it still doesn't work.
Can anyone help?

what the heck is a ram stick, I doubt I have one? I think it's maybe because I turned off the pc when it was doing one of those Windows updates, it took like 10 mins and still didn't finish so I thought it just froze.

Just to let you know because the problem is while its starting up your gonna have a lot of trouble diagnosing. We can sit here and thow up ideas but your probably not gonna be able to do them...Quickly but here we go:

Start it up in Safe Mode - Depending on RAM config try swapping sticks, using only one etc - Remove all peripherals - Try the recovery option on the Windows CD (Let a pro do it).

Yippy your problem is gonna give you headaches...take it to a pro. Where abouts in Melbourne are you?

EDIT: no luck, I'll have to take it to a pro. And just wondering, will my hard disks and stuff get wiped and will everything get deleted if I try and re install Windows?

Without seeing your computer I would say that your stuff should be safe based on the type of problem you getting. Make sure you stipulate that you want to keep the contents on the drive. They can easily back up your drive.

My personal suggestion is to take it to Centrecom (there are few around Melbourne. I personally use Bundoora). Now im not wanting to turn this thread into a recommendation of computer stores. This is just a personal recommendation. I fix all my pc's but those guys are a good bunch and as with all centrecom's they are extremely cheap!

**EDIT** Sorry yippy you asked if you reinstalled Windows would you lose everything..Well I cant answer that Yippy but the chances are pretty high if you dont know what your doing mate...

From my exp when a PC freezes going into safe mode a faulty RAM stick is usually the problem.
Also have you installed new hardware or installed new drivers lately? They often causes rebooting issues and such.
I've seen safe mode fail due to a faulty graphics card that was recently installed.

We could sit here all down rattling off potentials, yeah take it to a PC shop and as for your data if they can't/wont back up there is an option to repair windows not reinstall.
Repairing Windows will delete the windows folder and put it back, it can be a bit messy and generally I wouldn't do it but it's the easiest way to minimize losing data.

Also I HIGHLY recommend and sware by a program called Getdataback, there are 2 versions, 1 for NTFS the other for FAT32 HDD, by default you would probably be on NTFS.

You may need to get the full version from an "undisclosed source" as the trial won't recover, just show you what is available.
I've pulled data off a hard drive that had been formatted and wouldn't register as a hard drive with this gem...Sooo if you attempt anything this is another way to go back.

I agree with annirowe and dsreaper u shud have taken it to a comp shop or read about it in forums... learn from it dont just take the easy way by reisntalling windows lol and i wouldnt stick my hand into the comps hardware (eg ram) if i were u cuz u could do more damage than good if u dont know exactly what ur doind (example give ur ram and hardware a static charge which will fry all ur components inside)

U shud try to go back steps on what exactly u did , installed ect before the problem came across ur way so then u cud figure out exactly what cud be the prob.

You shud download a program called Registry Mechanic.. From what you have just mentioned it most prob be a problem with ur registry it screwed up this program shud fix all ur problems u have , also keep ur anti virus up to date and have a anti spyware program installed to keep all the s**t that comes from the net...

The error your experience could be many things. Usually a new installation of Windows will fix it.

Since you don't know what a RAM stick is, I would highly recommend taking it to a professional to fix it for you.

i doubt you reinstalled windows.... if you truelly reinstalled windows you wouldnt have any data left. What you did was a repair which has fixed corrupt files. You will need to find the drivers for your wireless probably if your wirless isnt working (can you see the network device at all??).

You went down the last resort path Yippy but I congratulate you for puling it off based on your experience.....
