I hate using pallies, it screws up your usage of otehr characters because they're WAY too easy, you can heal yourself during battle, add onto your armour by a billion etc...

Nbo, I found the 2 best ways to choose a faction is what your mates are and what class you want.
If your mates are alliance then join Ally otherwise you can't chat and quest etc.
As for class depends on what you like to do in end game raids:
Take/Cause Damage: Warrior
DPS: Rogue - straight attacking
Heal: Priest, Druid or Shaman
Mage: Attack bosses from afar and poly morph
Lock: DoT enemy's and help pick off mobs
...and so on.

If you go PVP server be prepared for a LOT of ganking...it drove me nuts that's why I left Bloackrock...lame lvl 70's and stuff will camp on your body for ages...quite sad really.
PVE lvl 70 = Help Guildies
PVP lvl 70 = Gank lowbies
