Wii Software \ Concern over Game Quality

like everyone else I've been salivating over the Wii for the past eyar and been intrugued by the new control system to revolutionise the gaming industry. However in looking at [url www.metacritic.com/ I've noticed that with the exception of Zelda, most of the games are getting hammered or are quite average.

I know launch games traditionally arent that strong, especially as developers are getting used to a new system but I am concerned about the mid-long term nature of the Wii and the games.

In particular I w as looking forward to red steel and will get it, but am anticipating takling it back within a week...

anybody else starting to have doubts?

I use www.gamerankings.com/ due to the fact it takes an average of reviews from other sites to try and give an unbiased and level perspective. There are a number of 80%+ games on release which I think is quite good for a roundup of release titles.

Some titles (i.e. Red Steel) have been a let down but others have done very well.

I personaly think the wii has had a very succesfull launch title line up, all you need to look at is the launch of ps3 and xbox360 titles to see the wii has done extremly well to launch with decent titles!!! All I know is that there are more games I wan't to play for the wii at launch than any other console I have owned or want to own!

Just look at the success of the DS, that had a fairly lousy launch lineup but now it's trouncing not only the psp but nearly every console out there!!

Now if nintendo can transfer the ds success to the wii, then I think it's gonna be good times for everyone!

I think another important point to consider is that reviewers can't set the bar too high to begin with....if they rate all the launch titles quite highly they don't have room to move for future titles.

The problem with RS is that its had a few average reviews and people have run with it. A lot of people bashing it haven't even played it. Example one of my younger cousins is telling me not to buy it because it has crappy controls, he hasn't seen it or played, hes going on reviews.

From what i have read on other forums is people giving it 15min and bashing it, then you have people that gave it a chance and have stated that once you get past the learning curve it is a really great game.

Remember that game reviews are idiot proof. If its not that easy to pick up right away they tend to score lower, simply because people that haven't played games that long or just want fun easy games go on said reviews. If you really want a game you tend to read into it and know a lot about it before its even released.

I think it's safe to say that we will all make our mind up when we play the games ourselves and only use the reviews as a rough guide.

I myself have liked heaps of games/movies that have had shoddy reviews and hated many things with great reviews.

Take that damn Troy movie. One of the worst I've seen ever.

To be honest i'm not too surprised at the low averages (actually, they're not too low... just not too high). Normally launch titles aren't that great mainly because the companies making them are still inexperienced with the new system. Plus it seems that nintendo are deliberately leaking out the big guns one at a time to keep the pace going (first zelda, then making us wait for mario galaxy, ssb brawl, metroid, etc). But hopefully the Wii won't be a one trick pony where the only games are the "classic" ones and everything else being rubbish (cough NGC cough)

I'm also aware that there's plenty of games I like which reviewers hate and vice versa, which is why i look at places like metacritic who compile all sorts of reviews to get an idea whetehr it's worth picking up or not.

I'll still pick up my pre-ordered wii and zelda and red steel but right now i'm not buzzing the way I was pre-release in the US.

Yeah, i've had my ups and downs with looking forward to the wii but when I think of the fun we're gonna have when mates come round or family gatherings, everbody will be able to have great time and thats what it should all be about really, just having fun!

Saying that, I reckon it will be a little time before the hardcore games come out to statisfy the veteran gamer, cause developers will have had more time to utilise the wii remote. On a plus point thats stuff we can look forward too!

N64 nailed its launch titles they all scored around 90% (Quality over Quantity!), without stealing zelda T.P from the cube the wii's line up would be a disgrace. Home consoles cant be compaired with portables there just too different.
Nintendo has been my choice for 18years now, but the wii is all hype and promises. Nin has so much ground to make up in the online gaming department, yet with over half a decade of development they werent able to launch with a online gaming service! Then the icing on the cake was hearing Metroid wasnt going to have ANY multiplayer. They must be having serious problems with their games servers or worse they dont have enough faith in the wii to invest ahead of time either way hype and a cube port are the ONLY selling points for the wii. It already looks like Nin Aust is up to its cube like tricks the smart money says no one in Aust gets component cables till next year.
Will games on the wii be any less "fun" to play in 6-12 months..... NO! So stop tripping over each other to throw your money at a system that has more cons than pros.
1. The controller debarcle
2. Nintendo Australia still doesnt give a sh!t
3. No depth to exclusive titles (Rare needed replacing)
4. Online problems (free gaming service doesnt exsist)
5. Nin reliance on hype over substance to sell units
6. For what it is its isnt cheap at all!
7. Needing a cube port to create intrest.

Personally its all about Wii Sports and Tp .... i cant really see anything id go out and buy apart from these two....but TP is going to be long and big hopefully by then there should be some better games around.... throw in the entertainment of VC and Cube playability
