Virtual Console & WiiWare \ Problems displaying VC games on HD TVs

Hi there,

Some of you like myself have had issues with running VC games on LCD and Plasma TVs when using component cables.

Basically Wii and Cube titles are okay but VC games (usually 16 bit era or earlier) will not display correctly.

Unfortunately this is not something that can be remedied by changing settings and can only be fixed by switching back to composite cables and then changing settings.

I sent a fax to Nintendo of Australia (they don't publish their email addy)regarding this matter and recently received a follow up phone call. I have been offered a full refund for the VC games that I have purchased (not for the VC controller though) and have been advised that the 'issue' is being investigated.

I provided them with the model number for my Acer LCD TV.

I strongly encourage all others who are experiencing this kind of problem to put pen to paper and send a Fax or letter to Nintendo. The letter should include details about the type of TV set so that the tech people can work towards a solution. Or at least publish a warning on the Wii shopping channel advising that certain VC games will not work with certain Television sets.

Nintendo Customer Service Fax: 03 9730 9922

I intend to contact them further to aid the investigation. If you are experiencing this kind of problem please contact Nintendo of Australia and please also post here with your set details (model numbers).

I think it's because the PAL VC games run at 50hz as opposed to 60hz.

That's definitely part of the problem. It may well be the TVs inability to handle a variation in signal. If so Nintendo can't fix the problem except to warn customers and possibly offer 60hz options for EDTV Wii gamers...

perhaps nintendo can just publish the 60hz ntsc games instead of wasting time with the slow 50hz generation.

my vc games dont work, i got chastized when i mentioned it on this forum because it was apparently my pathetic tv.

once again, pick up the ball nintendo, support your software.

Exactly, it is only certain brands/models. It's not always cheaper models either. Acer, Samsung and LG are a few of the bigger names on the list, and some of their TVs have problems and others don't.

I'm really glad for those that don't have any issues but it does suck for those that do.

I got a refund for now but one of the main reasons I got the console was to re-live some classic games. I hope this gets fixed soon.

So come on! as a community, lets let Nintendo of Australia know that there is an issue so that they can fix it.

i had a similar problem, but to fix it, i found you can launch the game, then hit home on the remote, and then the screen is viewable, then click to resume the game, and it works

not sure why, and this may or may not help you

Unfortunately for many of us the home key pause/un-pause doesn't work generica

The problems seem to be for NES, SNES and Megadrive (Genesis) games only syndicate. And this only happens to be certain models of televisions. My 26" Acer has trouble but other people with other models from Acer seem fine.

The point of this thread was to bring attention to the problem and let people know that if they are experiencing this type of thing that they need to inform Nintendo of Australia in writing (as they don't seem to be very helpful over the phone).

I think that the Wii console is wonderful and would love to see this problem fixed ASAP, but the tech people at the Big N will need to know where the problems are.

Thanks for the PMs from people who have similar issues. I'll be sending further advice to Nintendo and encourage all of you to write to them as well.

Make a noise campers!

I got a 50" LG DLP Rear-Projection HDTV and it all works perfectly. Must be a Rear-Projection advantage over plasma/lcd (like the ONLY advantage). Hopefully the problem will be sorted by the time i score a Laser TV by the years end.

Hey I got a HD LCD TV and I have 3 VC Games - Mario 64, Mario Kart 64 and Donkey King Country. On the 64 games I noticed the gfx to look alot fresher and crisper but they are a tad jaggy along with Donkey Kong Country. When playing Mario 64 when you are talking to a character during game play the text is jaggy too, bit hard to read. Anyone else get this problem or know how to fix it?
Thanks

50hz Super Mario World is painful. I'm playing 50hz, right? That's why it feels so unresponsive, right?
