1) Nintendo invented the D-pad. But everyone copied this.
2) Nintendo innovated with shoulder buttons. Everyone copied this, but Sony added 2.
3) Nintendo added analogue. Sony blatantly copied this, but added 2 cause they felt that 2 analogues sticks in the wrong place were better than one in the right place.
4) Nintendo added rumble. Sony copied this.
5) Nintendo creates the first successful and competely reliable wireless game controller based on radio (RF) technology as (wavebird) as opposed to the touch and go infra-red. Everyone copies this and go's with Blue tooth radio technology.
6) Nintendo add's motion sensing. Sony copies this but there implemention appears to be inferior, possibly because of patent issues but possibly also because when Nintedo revealed the wii, Sony didn't have enough time to research an implemenation that would be cheap enough to manufacture in time for launch.

In most cases it's Nintendo either bringing existing technologies, successfully into gaming, or totally creating new technologies. But what have Sony came up with? that stupid buzzer quiz game?? lol even the Playstation was actually originally suppose to be a joint nintendo product.

Of course Sony did bring out the eye-toy ( which was Okayish ) but I think this time the hi-res camera technology together with a processor that can really make sense of all those pixels being fed back by the camera should make it much much better.

I like to add, Nintendo invented Power Glove, if Im correct, it was here way before Microsoft sidewider freestyle pro control pad

Are you sure you're not just bitter that sony has completely dominated the home console market for the last 11 years?

yeah they were the 1st to add dvd playback but whats that got to do with gaming besides burning out your laser quicker and who doesnt have a dvd player these days anyways? but the backwards compatibility thing i think you may be right with that.

I wouldnt call it bitter i just think that they dont deserve as much credit as they get because they have never been trend setters they have prettymuch copid 80% of there ideas.

Well, heres another one for you, which many gamers may have heard, is that Sony is also planning a successor to the PSP, and guess what, it has touch screen capabilities!

We all know touch screen has been around for yonks, with quite possibly the first machine I can think of using it, was the Milton Bradley, but, as far as hand helds outside of the phone and pda world, Nintendo were the first dream this up for the magical ds. Are we going to see a dual screen PSP in round 3?

So what if sony copies nintendo or nintendo copies sony. who honestly cares. as long as the consumer gets a good product and is happy with it, big deal. I mean if you are genuine about your company A shouldn't copy company B, then shouldn't you be critical of Nintendo for copying Magnavox who had the first video game console?

Thats different its like saying you should be criticle of either coke or pepsi because 1 copied the other. Making a product thats already been invented is fair enough and things are copied all over the world but i was just pointing out that Sonys come up with inferior ideas on there own they have prettymuch had to resort to copying.

I agree with Pezza. Companys will come up with their own versions of anything that is successful for a competitor. Should Sony and Nintendo not offer online cos Microsoft were the first to do it so successfully. Of couse they should.Companys will give consumers what they want regardless of who did it first.

No it's not different, it's pretty much the same. The d-pad controller had been invented and used well, so why shouldn't they use that idea? Perhaps they pay royalties to nintendo if they patented it? Sony have come up with great ideas, Buzz is one of them (which you wrote of with a well thought out and researched LOL), eyetoy was most certainly revolutionary and a pioneer for alternative input to games (did it motivate thinking in the nintendo camp for the wii-mote?). My point is you have a clear bias against Sony and it impairs your judgment.

Hey eventhough now Sony is losing it with the PS3 at the moment,(rough sales overseas) but they did make gaming mainstream rather than confined to geeks and nerds (such as myself). Hence, they made gaming cool. I must say, if Nintendo were to rule the gaming world, I don't think videogames (excluding PC) will ever have mature/horror themes. So...kudos to them!

I hate the sixaxis! Its sooo cheesy. Has anyone tried it? I played Gran Turismo HD (Demo version) at Game Traders and it felt like a cheap third party controller without the rumble...poor.

I have to agree with BeNo29 on this one. Nintendo have definitely contributed more to console gaming than anyone.

I don't agree with pezza when he says Sony "completly dominates" the market. The market stretches a lot further than Australia, dude - check ur stats.

You're absolutely right. According to console sales statistics, sony is most definitely losing it at the moment. They've got a lot of work to do to. I also agree that they broke down that nerd barrier. My mates and their wives now come over to my house to play playstation 2! That would NEVER have happened years ago. They come over to play SINGSTAR! oh, chalk that up for another of sonys excellent innovations. Never tried the sixaxis, doesn't sound too good?

First of all, i said "completely dominated"...past tense. If you're going to quote someone, at least get that right! Now, on to the stats...

en.wikipedia.org/

Just have a look at the console sales from 1995-2006(why this time frame? because in my quote i said the past 11 years). That spans from sony releasing the ps1 through to just releasing the ps3. PS1 sold 102.49 million consoles. PS2 sold 103.69 million consoles.

The nearest competitor in that time frame for a home console is...
Nintendo 64 at 32.9 million. Yep, thats dominating the market in my book. Agree with me now we've checked the stats?

Yet another person who somehow believes that you can only get kiddie games on nintendo platforms...

If you look at the majority of Sony made games you will see that the majority of them are kiddie games. Its the third party developers who really push the more adult games, and they make them for all consoles most of the time.

Nintendo make games for everyone. I dont think you could say the zelda series is kiddy. sure they have made some kiddy games, but so have the others. at least nintendo doesnt charge an arm and a leg to own something the size of an old VHS player.

Sony created Betamax, how bad can they be?

They also gave us the first Walkman.

Plus the fact that the original Playstation was a gaming juggernaut to me says they are not too bad.

In saying that, I didn't like the PS2 and won't buy a PS3.

They may of sold more playstations at that period of time but this is now its not the past. The ds and wii are doing well and ninendo was always doing ok due to the gba and gameboys always selling well, yes they were behind in the console market(as you blaitently pointed out in a thread about innovation & contribution to gaming).
But only time will tell this time. Because as much as people say how bad the ps3 is doing it could do better than the wii in the long run but it doesnt look so good so far.

As i said i was just pointing out that Nintendo have contributed more to GAMING and if it wasnt for them Sony and The Playstation brand wouldnt be the same because they wouldnt have anyone to copy most of there ideas from.

I will give you the PS1 was a great machine, owned one myself. I just think they have gone too far with the PS3!

True but the Betamax was a great machine. I've gone through many of them over the years.

Just saying that they're not worth hating.
