Wii Software \ R Type

Now R Type is mean to be released onto the VC today and i LOVE those kinds of games (I own IKARUGA on GC and it is WICKED). Is R-Type worth getting, does it have powerups and all that other wicked stuff.

Yeah well i WAS saving my Wii Points for N64 games mainly with a few Snes classics but it seems that Nintendo aren't as interested in releasing N64 games as they are other games. I havent yet got 120 stars in Mario 64, but i would like something else to play too.

Chalk n cheese. Cannot compare Ikaruga to r-type. Or r-type to Ikaruga completely different game.
Like saying Sonic compared to Need for speed.

The only difference is one is a vertical shooter and the other is a horizontal shooter. Also one has powerups (i hope) and the other doesnt, it has the 'flip' ability on the ship. It is the same genre of game, just in a different direction (and for the record, you can make ikaruga a horizontal shooter too, making it even more similar). It is nothing like saying Sonic is similar to Need for Speed, more like saying Mario 64 is similar to Banjo Kazooie

SHMUPs are my favourite games and easily my favourite genre. I think perhaps you are splitting it up into vertical/horizontal shooters cause the view is totally different. Either way i want to know how this R-Type game stacks up against classics like Raiden.

The gameplay of R-Type is noticeably distinct among shoot 'em ups. Invariably the player will lose not because of an inequality in firepower, but because of the design of the levels themselves. There is usually a 'correct' way to get through a level, but players must learn these by experience - ie. by losing and restarting from earlier in the level.

Oh, and by the way. R-Type is definatly considered a classic, and you would be mad not to get it.

If Salamander, Nemesis, Gradius series, Paradious series come to the VC you have to get those as well. Plenty of other good series, but there the first ones to come to mind from that golden age of shooters.

Here's a not bad review of the game which doesnt seem to give too much away...

A while ago now i played a vertical shooter on mega drive but i can't remember for the life of me what it was. It was a sequal, like the 3rd in the series i think. There was a start-screen cheat for 99 lives and it had some amazing powerups. Can anyone rekindle my memory.
