Mario Kart Wii \ Mario Kart online =/= skill

I decided to join the board simply to vent a little frustration toward a game that i've grown to hate.

Hands down, the best Mario Kart game ever created was the the Snes version. The multiplayer aspect wasn't as item dependent when compared to the likes of Mario Kart Wii.

On the Snes, as many of you more than likely already know, blue shells didn't exist. If you sucked at the game, it showed. A skilled player could lap another player in pretty much any race, this isn't the case with Mario Kart Wii. Sure, there are a FEW courses in which you can lap an opponent in, but a small number ( Yes, i'm aware it's only a small number) of races are determined on how lucky / unlucky you are with items.

That being said, I'm extremely unhappy on how the rating system works. My rating can fluctuate anywhere between 7700 - 9300.

Before the game was released in Aus I ready many reviews / previews. It was mentioned that you would play others based on your rating at the time; however, i've been in races where the highest ranked player is sitting comfortably on 9800 and the lowest ranked player has a rating of 4800, I find this hardly fair.

Personally speaking, I'd rather be put into a room with players ranged between 7500 - 9000, this never happens. So there I am, sitting in a room with a rating of 8900 and the others i'm playing with have barely hit the 7000 mark. Per win, I receive approximately 30-40 rating points. Now per loss, ---

(Assuming I end in last position) I'll lose close to 300 rating points, I don't find this particularly fair.

Now one might say " Well you shouldn't be losing to players of that calibre" and 9/10 times, you're probably right. However, when you're playing others with lower ratings, you will know that many of them like to choose courses such as Luigi Circuit where ANYTHING can happen.

Like last night for example, I was hit by 3 ( yes 3) blue shells in luigi circuit which resulted in my 10th ( out of 12) place. I lost 220 points. I would now have to win my next 7 races to be at the rating I was prior to this race.

There are many faults with the game ( Such as team battle mode) but I won't get into the others. It seems that as time has passed by, Nintendo has given up on the adults that play their games and are only catering for children.

Items for example should be based on how far away you are from 1st and 2nd position.

In a group of 8 skilled players ( who are all bunched together) it's hardly fair that player 7 gets a bullet / star / gold mushroom / lighting on the first lap, I mean, everyone is within 2 seconds of eachother. Items shouldn't be based on where you're coming in a race but how far you are from 1st and 2nd place.

Now i'm well aware that the game is far from balanced as someone had stated; however, it seems that in the last 15 years, Nintendo have forgotten about their adult players and are simply catering for children. The rubber band effect in single player is a perfect example of this. You could be racing rainbow road in world record time. Guess what? The computer players are right on your arse.

I'm particularly glad that there's no voice chat in this game as I would vent my frustration ( nerd rage) so loud that my neighbours would wake up in shock.

I guess i'm pretty disappointed as the main reason I bought a Nintendo Wii was for this game. I mean, lets be honest, how many good titles are on the Wii as opposed to other systems? Not many.

Anyway, to those that wish to troll this thread, go ahead. I'm from a particularly large forum where all I do is troll so I'll hold nothing against you.

Giancarlo.

giancarlo...I have been in races where I've been hit by three blue shells and still manage to win a number of times. I do understand where you are coming from. Mario Kart will always have its frustrating moments. But just remember, its like that for everyone. Sure it gives the guys and girls who can't race very well an advantage. But honestly, it has to be that way. Nintendo doesn't design games to suit the ego of the great racers. It develops the game for everyone of any skill to enjoy. It is more marketable that way. And it is only fair to those who can't race well.

However, I totally agree that the groups we race on on wfc should consist of people all with similar race ratings. That way, when you do lose by the chance of items, it doesn't hurt as much as the points you lose would be much smaller. The points you may gain may also be smaller, but hey...why shouldn't you have to work your way to the top.

So I agree with your point, but I don't think its the items system that is the problem.

I see your point Giancarlo. I used to hate losing over 200 points whether it be to server drop outs, amateurs getting lucky on Luigi circuit or the blue shell costing me in the end. Now when it happens I just shrug it off and see it as a challenge to get my points back. It's not like you can get more than 9999 anyway so it's no big deal.
My only gripe with MK is that I feel Automatic racers should be matched with other Auto racers and Manual Racers with other Manual Racers. As an Auto racer, I've come so close to cracking 9000 but never get there because some drifter with a gamecube controller will come along and disappear far ahead after 20 seconds of the race. Even if I have the perfect race, they are too far ahead. I've tried learning manual with the wii remote but it takes the fun away for me as I find it distracting trying to use weapons and drift at the same time. I also refuse to get a GC controller as I bought the Wii to embrace motion control, not to go back to the old hand-held devices.

I've broken the 9000 barrier on auto. And I race the top manual drivers on this site. With items i can beat them. Even those TEC ones (sternz...lol). Rarely, but usually I'm right up there with them. But when we race with no items...haha...well...its safe to say i'm last/2nd last every single time...

I use auto drift and I can match it with the best of them. It really depends on the track.

I think SNES Super Mario Kart will always be the best Mario Kart in terms of racing but Nintendo have left that formula. It is less of a racer and more to do with the items you get.

Even the time trials are stupid. You dont need any mushrooms. Boosting has also ruined the game.

Play the SNES Mario Kart time trials. To be the best you have to get as close as you can to the dirt without touching it.

In MKWii to be the best you need to mushroom, mono and mini turbo.

I miss the old Mario Kart formula but it seems to be buried. So I will just have to accept this new Mario Kart.

I doubt I'll ever embrace mini turbos but I can still have fun and be competitive.

Puts popcorn down-
Well Giancarlo... i guess apart from the battle rant, for the most part i disagree with almost everything youve written here. Sure the snes version was great fun and all but then again so was river raid on the commodore 64.....

Your rating seems to fluctuate a lot which means you lack consistency in your racing. Of the good racers i know their rating will only fluctuate by 200 or so at a time but generally on the rise... i know that when i lose my 9999 rating its back before i turn off the system (usually) You should thrive in the challenge of once passing the 9000 mark you only get 30 points per win even when racing 12 players.... should it be easy to get the 9999 rating? ( i actually believe though that the VR has nothing to with a players said skill level.)

Yes i am sure the system is set up to put you in the correct VR levels but sometimes (and you may have not put this into your equation) someone of lower skill level will want to join their friend online for some races despite the skill level of either friend. Again in saying this i more often than not find myself in rooms with only slightly lesser VR’s. If you don’t want to race people who lack skill and competition for yourself how about you find some decent players and exchange FC’s – with this you could arrange that you race where no one uses items – see who really is the king of luigi circuit...

I’ve been hit by 3 shells before (even 4 on one occasion) and more often than not they are @ inconvenient times... but if your ahead by enough you can usually get back in front before the end of the race however a skilled racer should be able to get back to the lead quite quickly after falling behind due to items – if your racing on luigi circuit and don’t want to be hit at the end only to lose perhaps you should adjust your game plan to suit the level your playing... ill let you work that one out for yourself.

In short move with the times and take each game for what it is. If you like the SNES version so much go and play that instead.. i think MKWII has a lot more upsides as opposed to downsides and there is a HUGE difference between a good player and a great player or as you geeks say 31337.

Thank god for no wii speak/voice chat in your case.... i’d hate to put up with your ranting and raving/whinging about items lol

Yours truly

lollerz I'll stop here and get back on track

I hate the multiplayer system. I no longer can win and am forced to watch me lose the lead to 4 10 year old kids because:

1. one of them had a blue shell
2. the rest had red shells and pelted me with them.

Its just unfair and I now resort to snaking which is now frowned upon
