Ok guys I'm back with a problem, and I know you guys on mywii are pretty tech savvy, so i need your help. Yesterday something went wrong with my computer, I'm not exactly sure if it's in the monitor or the cpu but the monitor won't display anything, even though the power is on. When I left my computer on and came back, I smelt something that was burning, so I think maybe one of the parts has blown up.

However, when i opened up the cpu everything looked fine, the graphics card fan was running so it wasn't that, the power fan was running fine. I don't know what's wrong? I think it might be that little blue socket that connects to the graphics card that has blown up. BTW I put in an extra 1GB of RAM in yesterday, but i don't think that requires any extra power to run. So ye, I don't know what is going on. Should I take it to a computer techie?

I think you should because it might be something in the monitor.
Did the smell come from the monitor or something else?
And check if the cords are plugged in properly.

Is your computer booting up when you turn it on?

Even with the monitor off you should hear sounds of the A: and also the windows start up music.

If you hear three beeps and then nothing it might indicate a problem with your RAM.

If it hasnt worked since installing your ram I will assume that to be the problem.

Yes - take it to a computer tech.

Not sure but sounds liike the hard drive has died. If you are not getting any sounds at all from the computer than that would be my assumption.

If you have more than one computer in the house or nearby you can try your monitor on that computer to rule out it being a faulty monitor.

Are your speakers in the monitor or separate? 'Cos if they are in the monitor, it may not play if there is something wrong with the monitor.

ok i just plugged in the monitor to this computer, it's not the monitors problem, so am I in bigger trouble here. If my hard drive is dead that means i've lost all of my files?

So the computer doesn't boot up at all? It might be a problem with the Display Drivers

First of all, it may still be a problem with the RAM. Has it worked since you installed the RAM?

If your hard drive is dead it 90% means you have lost your files. There is software called forensic software which can recover files from hard drives that have been formatted, or even hit by lightning.

This is very expensive. Perhaps computer techs may have data recovery software in which case taking it to the tech will be the best option.

If there is no beep then the comp isn't POSTing, it will POST with no hard drive so that ISN'T the problem.

Take out the video card and look for busted caps, there will be a yellowish sticky liquid and or burn marks around them if one has blown.
9 times out of ten if the computer won't post and there are no error beeps it is a video card problem, but the computer thinks there is a functioning video card there. It can sound a little confusing but if the motherboard detects a video card but the video card is faulty in some way it can confuse everything and act like a dead motherboard or cpu.
If you can get another video card to test try that, otherwise you will need a tech. Most charge about $25 to look at the computer then the hourly rate to fix it, but if you know a little about building them you can pay the $25 for the tech to find the prob, then fix it yourself. Thats what I do if I get stumped with a problem I can't solve, good luck

I dont think it is the drivers, it should be one of the parts because something blew up, and the drivers were working perfectly before, when I got my new graphics card i downloaded the newest ones. Ok that's good news az I'll go check the card right now

No. A computer boots up before it loads the display drivers and by going into safe mode it bypasses all drivers altogether.

The fact there is no sound at all when turning the computer on to me indicates a dead hard drive.

It is hard to diagnose this kind of problem over the Internet so while I can throw around a few ideas/options/scenarios, ultimately the best option is to take it to a computer tech.

(assuming the OP has checked to see if everything has been plugged in and turned on )

Edit: Read A2ra3l's post. This person has more of an idea than I do.

The computer will still beep with no hard drive connected, It doesn't detect the hard drive until it tries to load an operating system, if the hard drive is dead it will tell you after it loads everything else, unplug your hard drive and see, the comp will still turn on, but it will tell you it can't load an OS

ok well I checked the card and there doesn't seem to be any problems, so i think I will just have to take it to a tech because i cant find the problem here, it would probably be my best choice.

True. I now remember a while ago when a friends hard drive died my brother could still turn the computer on and I think go into BIOS.

So I guess that isnt the problem.

I think your motherboard is dead, no beeps at POST is a sign of this.
The RAM you put in may have been the wrong type/speed it could have burnt out and killed the board.
I've had it happen to clients before...smells like rotten eggs.

edit: oh and if anyone needs to recover files from formatted/damaged HDDs the best program I use is called GetDataBack by Runtime Software.

I dont think this is because everything still has power and the ram was working before the failure, the computer detected it when it was booting. I think the problem must be with the graphics card

Could be power supply as well, no beep at POST points to dead mobo or power supply I forgot about that.

What makes you think everything still has power if it won't turn on? Before it couldn't POST, has that changed??

all of the fans are running, the graphics card one, power supply one and another one. So i thought about the power supply but i don''t think that's the problem.

Just take it to a PC shop.
These parts can break internally, just because they "look fine" doesn't mean they are.
So if they all look fine and you don't have replacement parts to test with there's really nothing left to say.
