Nup, I haven't encountered this isssue.
Also the rumour that Wiikey's running 1.9g will stop working after a random period of time is BS as far as I am concerned. I think it all comes down to the install of the Wiikey and if it is authentic. I personally have recommended around 8 friends to get Wiikeys installed through ozmodchips and all of them have been running 1.9g since SM came out and not one of them has any issues at all.
With all the clones circulating in the US, it's not surprising there are people with issues. Just ensure you use an authorised reseller like ozmodchips, whose installs are very professional and fast if you want to guarantee that your Wiikey will work.
In your scenario, it sounds perhaps more like your laser is starting to wear out. You can find replacements, so it shouldn't cost you to much to fix.....
