Hmm, it could be electrical interference or loose connections.

Electrical Interference: Try putting the TV in a different room away from heaps of power boards and other devices.

Loose Connections: Is there any effect when you slap the Tv? With a bit of force but not too much(just enough to gently move things around in there)on the top and sides

Well if it's pretty old maybe the tube is gone, how old we talking? do you tune it in with knobs or does it have a remote?

has a remote 68cm surround speaker "probably" 12/15yrs old
i was guessing tube too.
am, saving for plazma/lcd before it dies so a bit longer life would be good

LCD for everything especially gaming. Plasma will burn in any images that sit on your screen for extended periods like the speedo on racing games. You could be watching Tv and have the ghost of a speedo in the corner of the screen forever!

Hmmm, a tricky one,
The first thing to do is make sure your wii is set to 480p. If you have done that, check all the plugs are in the right holes. I would say it is somewhere in the connections inside your tv or wii but that wouldn't explain why it always occurs in the same place, such as your bowling replay.
What sort of distortion? Side to side?, around the edges?, static?

It takes something like 300 hours or something of one image to burn into a plasma, isn't it? I could have my numbers mixed up, but theres a 3 in there somewhere.

EDIT: Also, all television broadcasters have a watermark in the corner screen, and none have burnt into my plasma. Yet.

The watermark hasn't burnt into your plasma yet, because the watermarks are relatively transparent. I remember ages ago, people complaining about the watermarks of the different channels, especially on pay tv, that it was burning into their plasma TV's. That was when you had the big red 7 for channel 7 and i remember the [V] for channel V.

Oh, and if you're going to be watching pay tv and falling asleep while watching, make sure you don't schedule any shows. My girlfriend's father's plasma is stuffed now because they always leave it on at night when they fall asleep, and forget they had programmed in a schedule for a show, hence, it stays on all night. Now they have a burnt in imagine (it's not too bad so far) of the damn scheduler.

When I say Burn-in it means that the pixels that sit in the same spot go through their life quicker, resulting in a dull area sooner than the rest of the tv. New technology plasmas are less susceptible to burn in. There is something around now called motion adaptive anti burn-in technology where the entire image will move the tiniest bit that you can't notice it with your eye. This movement helps reduce burn-in by changing the colours of the sub-pixels, but you've got to try and avoid having a bright image on the screen for long periods.
Also, watermarks are fairly dull but they are sitting there, eating the corner of your tv, just try to avoid leaving the same channel on for hours at a time, you may not notice the logos for years but they are aging those certain pixels faster.

I have exactly the same problem as spyke, and also tried 3rd party, and Nintendo cables. The distortion is like the V-hold on the TV has been messed up, and there's horizontal lines moving vertically up the screen. Aswell as Wii Bowling replays, I've noticed it when going thru doors in Super Paper Mario, and when you do a mega-strike in Strikers, and the view switches to Kritter preparing to save the shots.

You suggest setting the Wii to 480p... This is the first thing I did when I plugged the cables in. If you do this however, the distortion instantly appears (on the Wii setup screen), and doesn't go away until you change it back to the middle option (not sure what it is 60hz or something).

that is exactly what happens to mine if i try 480p. it happens on mega strikes and keeper saves in strikers aswell. i did do the 480p and my TV went crazy. its really strange.
atleast im not the only one i guess

, would be good to know how to fix it and why it does it

I think I read somewhere that even tho a TV has the connections for the cables, it doesn't automatically mean that it's 480p compatible. I can't find the source atm.

I more or less accepted my fate after that and didn't look further into it. I did notice that with the new cable the picture was clearer, brighter, and more colourful, so I was happy enuff.

The distortion isn't a deal breaker, since it's (at most) only for 1 second.

Having said all that tho, it'd be nice if there were a solution.

I think you are onto something there. I haven't come across this problem before so I am really not sure.

If you get less distortion on 60Hz you are better off using 50Hz as that is Australian standard. Component cables should give you a bit better quality anyway.

That is true. My PS2 is connected to a 26" Samsung TV by component cables, and even though the TV supports 576p up to 1080i, I can only get 576i on the YPbPr connections. On my 100cm Bravia, though, 576p is no problem.

The higher settings on the 26" are only available with an HDMI connection (something the PS2 is sadly lacking).

TBH, I haven't ever had my Wii on 50Hz, even with the composite cables, it's always been 60Hz. So my experience with the distortion during bowling replays etc, is on the 60Hz setting. I'll switch back to 50Hz as see if it still happens.

Alot of people would think that 60Hz is better because it's the next option in the menu, It is not better, it is only different. Leaving things on 60hz can cause flickering as it is a different standard to Australian TVs. This could fix your problem. Spyke, is yours set to 50Hz? if not, do it and report back.

I've set myself to 50Hz, and the issue still occurs, but I have a feeling it's not quite as often. Can't say for sure tho.

It seems to only happen when there's a transition from a light picture to dark. eg. when you get a stike in bowling, and strike symbol (white) fills the screen as it disappears, and then you look at the pins and the back of the lane (black). eg2. A strikers mega-strike is bright, and then you switch to Kritter saving the goals, which is darker. eg3. Going from the Wii menu (white) to the Mario Strikers game channel (dark).
