I normally find the Chaser funny, in fact some of the stunts they've done are down right hilarious. Except I didn't find this one funny at all.

You do realize they broke the law and face a maximum penalty of 6 months in jail?

I think it will be funny seeing them up in court pleading that they had 'no knowledge that they had entered a restricted zone'. See how far that will get them.

They voluntarily turned back when they reached the edge of the restricted zone, they didn't actually enter it. They'll probably be fined quite heavily and put Chas in prison for a month or two at worst

I care what the rest of the world thinks - we are part of the global population. Do you want all your littles toys, internet bandwidth etc...? It is called free trade. Like it or not, we are part of the global community.

As for not making the international media, it was on the US version of the Today show.

I am sure, they had to get plenty of legal advice before doing a stunt like this, as the ABC will shy away from anything that may result in high legal fees, just look at that Jones Town book.

Does anyone know if Canadian Prime Minister Harper, was in the country at the time.

Finally someone hits it on the head.
They went as far as their legal team said they could.
A fine for public nuiscance and a stern talking to is all they'll get.
I started this thread to see if people agreed with the joke or not. Not to theorize possible punishmments.

I think everyone should learn from this experience and move on. Australia was built on this "lariken" behaviour and its what makes this country great. Try pulling a stunt like this in the US and they would have been shot at. It goes to show how good a country we live in.

Also what it also showed was a major flaw in the Security arrangements. The police will have their butts kicked over this, but more importantly will learn from this and move on to ensure the world leaders are protected. Imagine if it wasnt the chasers and it was a terrorist organisation. We would probably have one big hole in a Blood Stained Sydney Street.

Yeah what they did was wrong, but no one was hurt, and a major flaw was shown and will have been corrected for when all hell breaks loose tomorrow in those streets.

And just so im not seen as sitting on the fence, I support the actions of APEC, and I also support the procedures that are in place at the moment. And I honestly dread what we may see tomorrow. I have a feeling something the likes we have never before seen in this beautiful country........And if that happens...well I will be ashamed!

Anyway todays only Friday.......So smile and be happy. Enjoy our last day of peace!!!! for all! lol

Just had a couple of Phone calls from Canada, asking if I knew the chassers, as they have just seen them on the news. They said that they should be congradulated for exposing a flaw in the security. And Harper is in Australia. I didnt think he was.

I think what they did was good. It tested the security and now because they made the NSW police keep on they're toes it'll make it even more difficult for actual harmful persons to get into a restricted zone.

Also I think they have a strong case to get them out of jail. We looked it up last night. They arrested them for lack of "Special justification" to be in a restricted zone but when you look up the definition. Special justification is given by Police officers. WHO waved them into the 'restricted area'. TWICE. After being shown fake ID's which I just found out apparently actually had "Joke!" and "Chaser" written on them.

EDIT: and yes I found the whole thing HILarious. Best jokes are in the truth of a situation.

Are you concered about the protests or something darker. Remember, the goverment needs you to be afraid of outside threats if they're to protect you upon re-election. or we could vote them out and stop beliveing in every Grim's fairy tale we're told.

Im concerned about the potential violence we are going to see because of the actions of these protest groups. I think Sydney's history will be forever scarred tomorrow.

And look this is only my opinion and we are all entitled to our opinion, but I just feel majority of these protesters will have been misinformed. Majority will be young, impressionable people, looking to cause trouble while protecting themselves within a large group and an even larger city. A lot will be there because they have never been in a protest and figure that it might be fun, Some will have been told by the teachers to go and support the cause (which is absolutely disgusting that teachers while holding a powerful and impressionable position are using their position to persuade "kids" to take part and have the same beliefs).

But hey here's hoping that those fences hold up. No matter where 20,000 people stand they are still gonna be heard and seen so I hope they are smart enough to remember that and not attempt to push forward.

I agree with you annirowe, that many of the protesters will not really know what they're protesting against. But I think it is important that people have the oppertunity to voice they're general discontent. I'm concerned that our socity is becoming far too meek and complicit, that our civil rights are being striped away and if we don't complain then everything our western domocrecies stand for will be destoryed by our own Polies in an attempt to protect them for outside threats.

But this is way off topic so I'll step down from my soap box.

hmm not too much off topic..... The underlying theme and the reason the Chasers did this was directly aimed at the security.. which is there to protect. Not so much from terrorists but more from protestors! hehe.

And Hawat I am fully for free speach, the right to an opinion, the right to hold a mass rally of over 20,000. It is what makes this country so good. Having been affiliated with unions in the past I am all for a fair world. However I also saw a very bad side to the union.

But Im against those people who believe that violence is the only way to be heard. And that the police will be the ones causing the violence. That they are someway there just to start a fight. Do these protesters stop to think that these police men and women have families that they go home to at night. That they will wake in the morning, kiss their children goodbye, and walk out the door not knowing if they will return home that night unhurt or worse. Police are only human... I hope the protesters remember that!

I think its the whole Chassers vs Today Tonight thing. Chassers seem to aim more at Today Tonight than ACA. and Today Tonight seems to do more stories on Chassers, its all great publicity for the Chassers.

did you see that Today Tonight story on how the chassers stories where fake? They showed a few sketches the chassers did, that where obviously fake, the chassers wernt trying to fool anyone with those sketches. The reply on the Next Chassers program was great.

Today Tonight, at first did some positive stories on the Chassers, there was talk around that time, that Channel 7 wanted to get the Chassers on 7.

Those cops in NSW are so dumb , the passes clearly say Joke, Insecurity & Chasers War, they obviously just had a quick glance at the passes & waved them through, what twits.

Theres a protest on atm in Hyde Park or something in Sydney today & they were expecting 5000 people, theres only a few hundred, LOL , protesting is a watse of time, protest with your votes at election time if you want to make a change. I personally think little Johnny Howard is doing a fine job & if you vote that stripper loving dill Rudd in then good luck to you cause this country will go down hill fast, Labor have a history of ruining economies. Just look at all the state labor governments around this country.

The protest organisers where talking 20,000+. I love when they only get a few showing up.

I love how the news sometimes interviews protesters, and ask them why they are protesting, and many have no idea. Or they say something like "we are protesting about globalwarming" and they get asked "what about global warming?" "well... that its bad... and stuff".

Labour will do just as good as the liberals with the economy. we are just riding the tail of the chinese economy. I work in the mining sector (R&D), and at work the feeling is that Labour may bring us closer to China. The Victorian economy is going great. We are due for an ecconomic correction in the next few years, Howard nor Rud can avoid it.
