vista + aero = rubbish. linux was doing all that stuff ages ago - now ms reckons theirs is a first? having crappy widgets on the side isn't gunna do it for me. at least mac's dashboard is actually a useful feature.

Mac. Once you go there you won't go back. It works. Sure, there's a little bit of a change if you're used to a PC, but it's easy to pick up and use... It's just simply the best thing I ever got.

Hey Guys sorry to pull back an old thread but I was after a small bit of advice from Mac users.

I'm getting a new laptop and I'm sold that it will be a Mac this time around...Vista drives me nuts.

My question is whether or not there is firewall software?
I know Mac's don't need AV software but is there firewall stuff that should be used?
This will be my banking/work laptop so it must be secure...after years of PC's you can't blame me for asking!

Thanks Guys

If you connect to the net through a router then it should have its own firewall. That's pretty much all you need but there is other software available.

sweet thanks man, yeah I use a router but on my PC's I'm still running Zonealarm Pro.

I'm really paranoid when it comes to security so if there's decent/recommended firewall software I'd definitely get that as well.

The biggest problem ive had with macs is upgrading them. It can be quite difficult to upgrade parts with a mac as not all parts are compatible. I too am looking at a new laptop in the next few months and have decided to get a laptop and install ubuntu (which is what i use now). Linux is just like using a mac (both based on same code), except you can use it on a normal PC.

Gee...are you sure you want to go down that avenue (getting an Apple). Don't forget there isn't as much software support for it. I'm a computer geek and before I got my laptop, I was also convinced to getting the little 12" iBook. Then my girlfriend made me see reason that their will be a whole lot less software support than a regular PC.

I think Vista is good. But you can also downgrade. I guess getting a newer Apple laptop will also allow you to run Windows on it as well. Bah, i don't know...upto you mate...

Apple has an inbuilt firewall software somewhere in OS X. Also try Netbarrier X or Firewalk. Netbarrier works fine for me

Yeah Phatbass I'd thought about that, I'm usually not the first person to ask for help, I'd rather google so software support isn't a large issue for me.
Besides I'm sure there's more than enough forums for Mac help (like overclockers for 1) so it'll be fine.
It'll basically run macromedia studio, play WoW and cruise the net...that's about it so upgrading isn't an issue either (it'll be spec'd accordingly to start)...plus hell I can emulate windows if need be.

b3nnii thanks for that, I'll check them out.

For those looking mac OSX's firewall (10.4) is located in:
System Preferences >> Internet & Networking >> Sharing >> Firewall.

Dont remember Guys. The BETA for Bootcamp is on Apple's website. For those that dont know Bootcamp allows you to dual boot your Mac so you can run windows. This method is excellent if you wanna play your Windows games that require Direct X, also for using some USB devices.

Or the option (And the one I use) is Parallels. This is an app that runs within OSX and that lets you run windows at the same time. Perfect if you want Windows Apps but want to start moving to Apple.

And this crap about more Apps on Windows than on a Mac is pretty much Crap. Yes you may have trouble finding a specific App but there are always alternatives! How many Windows apps are out there that are just pure crap??? Too many!
