It's not a RUMOR anymore!.... new version of Wii with DVD compat will release later this year first in Japan then to US for the Christmas Shopping season. I believe PAL version will be here in Jan 2008 with the same price $399.

Yeah, I heard that rumor as well. The rumor stated that it might also have some enhanced connectivity (maybe HDMI so it is all digital).

Remember Nintendo released a version of the Gamecube that could play DVD's in Japan, they also released the Gameboy Advance and DS. And Wii games are released on full sized DVD media, so the rumor might have some credence.

Gamecube games (which are normally on mini (8cm) dvds) can be played on DVDs

You wii does not have an MPEG2 decoder because the company who invented the technology require royalties to licence it to companies.

The laser is the same. In theory, nintendo could release an update to enable dvd playback. however this may not happen because it might take up a fair percentage of our minimal wii memory.

I also have a theory that the wii has DVD playback somewhere lying dormant which nintendo has the power to unlock via an update but this is doubtful as someone would have cracked it by now
