Wii Hardware \ When should I get a Wii?

Chud says:

G'Day all. I am definately getting a Wii. However, I have some concerns. I have read several horror stories about the Wii, and also positive upgrades that are potentially coming. Some examples include:

1. Wiimotes not functioning correctly.
2. CD contained within the Wii getting severely scratched when being played.
3. Nintendo developing a DVD Wii.
4. Wiimotes containing a rechargeable power pack. (Similar to DS battery)
5. Sensor bars not picking signals correctly due to interference of other electrical devices.

Now, the question is, should I bother getting one now, as I'm sure we have all read the various (biased) forums on the net, or should I wait until all the kinks are out and the number of quality games have increased.

It seems you are an experiences gamer. In your opinion, is the Wii the Holy Grail gamers have ben looking for? I have been an off again, on again gamer since my NES and SNES. I now have a PS2 and I think that games are getting stale. Don't get me wrong, the graphics on consoles, next-gen stuff, are improving, and there are a few stand out titles, but really, aren't the games really the same? I must admit, that since hearing about the Wii, I have been on every Forum, purchased several magazines and done some major research on the topic. I am keen; however, the last thing I want is buyer's remorse after the purchase. Any comments or pertinnt points any person wishes to add?

Oh, and another thing, is internet access with the Wii really that important?

the wii is unique. until sony & microsoft copy (again). once you plug it in & start playing. you'll be smiling for hours.... plus there's so much more to consoles today than just playing games. check out all the current "channels" available so far. plus the wii is so much easier on the budget....

If you're worried about games being the same on other consoles then Wii is what you want. It's amazing what the wii-mote adds to gameplay. Xbox and PS might have nice graphics, but the games still play the same. What games are you interested in?

As for internet connectivity, you don't need it, but then again, if you don't, you can't update the Wii (not sure how important that is) and you can't get the extra channels and download virtual console games.

Chud says:

Is there some reason to suggest that Microsoft and Sony are going to copy? I have heard about the SIXAXIS and it seems like a poor imitation based on gravity as apposed to motion. You also seemed to identify "channels" availability. Are you saying that to have a Wii, you must have the internet, or can you purchase the Wii without worrying about the internet factor.

The thing I love about the Wii is that it's so much more social than anything else I've played. I now spend most weekends at my friends place playing Wii Sports or Rayman Raving Rabbids.

I honestly hadn't heard much about the Wii until a friend got one... from the first time I played with it, I wanted one. It took awile for me to get one, but I don't regret it at all.

Chud says:

Well Matt, I am a Zelda fan from way back, so realistically, I would probably only use the internet to purchase Zelda VC games. However, in relation to other games, my tastes have definately changed. For example, I am over the Final Fantasy series. I think I'd probably initially get Twilight Princess and Monkey Ball. I'll definately wait for Trauma Centre and Cooking Mama (for my daughter, and maybe me) Mario will definately make a reappearance. I just really want to get some different games not the norm. I'm just revitalised into the gaming industry all over again.

Trust me, even playing Wii Sports is great, something new and cool. Its really hard to go back to something like PlayStation, something so benign after playing something new and inventive like the Wii.

Okay, to answer your questions:

1. Wiimotes not functioning correctly.

Apart formthe people on here I know at least 3 people have have Wiis personally and have had them for different amounts of time and have yet to hear of a problem that hasn't been something simple to fix, like the wii-mote not being synched properly or the battery getting low. As with anything there is a chance that something will go wrong, but sometimes it comes down to how it was used too.

2. CD contained within the Wii getting severely scratched when being played.

I've heard of this happening with almost everyt system/pc/mac on the market at one time or another.

3. Nintendo developing a DVD Wii.

I haven't heard this one, but to me it's not a big thing since I have a DVD player which is not region locked like most game system DVD players are.

4. Wiimotes containing a rechargeable power pack. (Similar to DS battery)

I have seen rechargable battery packs for sale on ebay already. I havent' looked to see if they are official, which may be a warranty concern, but they are out there.

5. Sensor bars not picking signals correctly due to interference of other electrical devices.

Considering I live in a share house and have a 110W bass amp, 40W bass amp, computer, stero, turntable and DVD player all in my bedroom and haven't had a problem, I don't think it's going to be something that is a huge

Short answer - yesterday!

Long answer - If you know that you're going to get one why wait? The problems that you have stated are pretty rare and if they do happen Nintendo are pretty good when it comes to fixing/replacing so you shouldn't worry.

As for waiting until they come equiped with a dvd playback - that hasn't been confirmed if it will be released anywhere outside Japan, and if it does come to Aus it will probably be in about 2 years - can you really wait that long just for something that I'm sure you already have?

Internet access isn'nt that important but who could deny themselves from reliving the old classics? VC is one of the best things that has happened to console gaming.

As for worrying about it getting stale - don't. Unless you are one of those gamers that play 16 hours a day then you have plenty of games to keep you amused until the next batch come out. Although I don't play it as much as I did on release I haven't regretted it one little bit. I love my Wii, Go buy one!....NOW
