Wii Hardware \ Wii HardDrive

BeNo29 says:

Ok there have been rumors flowing around that Nintendo are going to eventually release a HardDrive add on for the Wii to accomidate Sega Saturn and GCN games on Virtual console but they have denied that a HDD is in the works but iv seen a few sites where people are saying you can add on your own USB HDD by doing this...
1- Download the latest firmware on your Wii

2- Format the USB hard Drive to FAT32, maximum 120GB
(Though some website claims that a 300GB hard drive works too)

3- Remove Any SD card form the SD slot

The Wii should detect your USB hard drive as an SD card.

why would you want to download a GCN game when you can play it on disc. If n64 gamea are $15 imagine how much Gc games will go for!

If a HardDrive is to be released, It just sucks how Nintendo will probably release there own HardDriveto make money off it, they shouldve allowed any usb HDD to be used I hope someone figures out a way to by-pass it soon.

I see no need to. The guy admitted that he was spreading unconfirmed rumours on his Google Docs page at docs.google.com/

ok, Im not absolutly sure so dont quote me on this but i think the USB ports on the wii wont run any external hardware. I read that somewhere they are a power source and nothing more.

Nope, Nintendo announced recently that they have partnered with some company to develop a firmware update to run external USB storage. As for GCN games on the VC, that instantly showed to me personally that it was a bull**** article. I saw Nintendo in talks with Toshiba to develop a 1TB HDD for the next-gen Nintendo machine for adding GCN and Wii games to the next machine which will be on Digital Distribution. Adding GC games now would defeat the purpose of having a drive that can take both disks on the Wii. We will see the Wii being compatible with external storage devices, but if anything, it will be to add Dreamcast and Saturn games to the mix....especially with the Dreamcast having its production in Japan stopped recently.

DC games & Saturns games would be great. They will have to bring out a External HD soon I bet (Well I hope so)

Are you sure? The only press release I remember about something like that was:

www.esol.co.jp/

However that press release seems to have been widely misunderstood. It doesn't talk about a new device but says that they provide USB and FAT file system software components that are already used in the Wii.

It wouldn't defeat the purpose, backwards compatibility would still be there for people who have a use for it (ie people who already have GC games).

VC GC games would serve an additional purpose, giving Nintendo an avenue to sell GC games to people who have never had a Gamecube. With the Wii looking like it's going to be massively more successful than the GC there might be a good market for that.

However GC games can be pretty sizeable so selling them physically in a budget range would probably make a lot more sense for the near future.

If they released a hard-drive, my guess would be it would be an external hard-drive (i.e connecting through the 2 USB Ports via the back of the Wii.

But for now I don't think they need to release one as such, but after a year or too. Some peoples block spaces (this is controlled by virtual memory, correct?) will be running out and may need extra space which is where the hard-drive will come in handy.

I don't think it will come out any time soon though.

i'm fairly certain it would be silly using virtual memory on a games console... especially one without a HD drive
