so why is Vista so much better then XP anyway? it probably has new features that don't work and that's about it. And if you want an operating system that boots quickly just disable Prefetch in the registry, or delete anything in your prefetch folder. My computer boots in about 30 seconds now

Had the luck of already getting Vista Ultimate and Office 2007 for free and before anyone asks, no they're not pirated. Perfectly legitimate copies of both software. If you have the specs...why not upgrade if Windows is your thing.

Vista is definitely worth upgrading too, it's a lot better than XP, security is better, functionality is better and if you're an administrator you'll find that out very quickly.
Only downside so far is apart from the obvious increase in resources it needs backwards compatibility still isn't 100%.
But fear not, you can quite happily dual boot XP and Vista, by repartitioning (or another hdd) Vista will take over and let you dual boot, you don't even need to have a FAT32 partition (good news for all NTFS users).
If you're thinking of ripping it off you're in for a tougher time than XP, yeah it will be done but those who are expecting to use a corporate copy hahaha they also need to be individually activated with Vista
I get Vista Ultimate for free from work seeing it's my job to know the new technology inside out.

Jac33au... how can it possibly use a machine 15 times better than XP? And if thats the case, dont you think there must be something SERIOUSLY defective in the X machine?

I think alot of people will go "WOW! Its like so faster!" when in actual fast, they had to upgrade the hardware just to run the crappy OS.

[/begin rant]
I cant see any justification in that price. It'll give you a very strict license for the software, that will crash, and get massive virus's, and wont be swiftly updated. Its not 100% compatible with current Windows apps, and its got a nice GUI (thats all I can see the good in.)

Now take linux. You have maybe 75% compatibility with Windows apps (Not that you need it because every popular windows app, has 10 open source rock solid linux clones), you have a weekly updated system (Yes. just about every week (sooner if its a security update) you get updates, free, for the system, without even putting in any effort)... And you get a dead sexy GUI. You can CHOOSE how you want the system to behave. Stable or unstable. You can choose every aspect of how the user interface behaves. And you can choose to use it alongside Windows or even run windows from within it.

Personally, Ive even chose to help programs/projects in bettering themselves, because 99% of everything written for linux is open source, which means... If you dont like it, you can change it. Or suggest to the real life programmers what would make it better!

Toma you have to keep in mind Linux for most people is too complicated. Not everyone can handle having everything customizable they need it "this is how it is, don't like it ts" kind of attitude that MS has...trust me i'm an admin, if I had to teach everyone how to use Linux....oh god that's a scary thought!

I dual boot Linux and I love it (Tux rules!) But windows isn't as bad as your making it sound. Yeah they charge you a lot for it and it gets attacked (viruses etc.) but that's mainly because it controls the market. What's the point of making the blaster worm to hit 10% of the population as opposed to 70%...

I don't want to get into a Linux vs Windows argument (please don't take this post as a Windows user attacking you).
I think people should check out Linux which will run alongside XP, there are a few easy ones to learn like say Xandros or Linspire...they're pretty straight forward for a windows user.

dsreaper, alot of people still take Windows classes just to send emails and stuff. If you look at Ubuntu, theres a guide to using the whole system about 2 clicks away from the default boot desktop. I think the biggest thing, is Windows has been forced down peoples throats being the main OEM OS that comes on new PC's.

As for teaching people how to use it, I taught my parents (late 40's) how to use it and they find it very simple. Also, the new versions of Ubuntu now have composite extensions (pretty graphics) enabled on boot. So youll get a sexy desktop, with support, straight off the CD.
I click "System" scroll down to "Help", and you have "System Docs" "Online Docs" "Community Support (which is an IRC client pointed at IRC user help)" and "Commercial Support"

Ive only once found a problem with Ubuntu. I filed a bug about it, and now its fixed. Show me that level of support in Windows and Ill get a Microsoft tattoo on my ass.

Yeah that's undeniable and I completely agree with you on that. The other day I had to find an alternative to some MS products for a client and the fact MS own everything makes it BS...I recommenced they move to Linux.

That's pretty cool your parents were able to pick it up, i've personally never used Ubuntu but and going to give it a go.

Haha that happens all the time with Windows...when 100k people get attacked they patch lol. Yeah I don't think you'll be getting that tat anytime soon...get Tux

Haha a friend of mine got a tux tattoo on her leg. Shes an uber-nerd.

Im talking about getting a patch less than 4 hours after the security bug has been found (And having it sent to your system straight away!) Now thats support.

Also, see www.wired.com/ XD

PS. Im just sick of having family members call me for support and all they say is "Ive got 57 virus's" and me saying back "Format your PC."
