Wii Hardware \ Valve boss shares view on ps3 and Wii

The way I see it, the PS3 may have good specifications and for a blu-ray player, its considered cheap based on current market price. Bear in mind though, that the blu-ray is a Sony technology. If Sony cannot convince the DVD and Gaming industry to accept blu-ray over HD DVD its likely that they will fail. Current trends suggest that HD DVD will probably win over Blu-ray. Seems like the VHS and Betamax war all over again.

Also if the installed user base is small compared to the current DVD format for games, Sony will again fail as 3rd party software developer will not invest time and money to develop games for them as it will cost much more to develop for a higher format disc. Like what is happening to the PSP, poor sales resulted in major movie producers pulling out of the UMD format leaving Sony only label.

That being the case, Sony could ended up having only limited games for the PS3.

The case for Sony currently is rather blick.

Pretty easy to throw a GUI up with Linux and run all the games with wine!

Good points, but i'm not sure i agree with the conclusions you draw. Do you think that the PS2 would have failed had the DVD standard not been accepted? I don't think so. You'll also find that whilst sony is the public champion of blu-ray (because it's in the ps3) they aren't the only company that has a vested interest in it. According to wikipedia, sony is only one of the founders of the blu ray disc association who co-developed this technology en.wikipedia.org/

I'd be interested to know what current trends you know of that suggest HD DVD will win over Blu-ray? You're spot on though, it's betamax vs VHS all over again. Although one possible solution as i see it is the use of hybrid players that play both standards. Do you remember the DVD war? i don't think many people do. See

Of course I remember the DVD wars and also know that Australia sort of bypass the VCD phase to reach DVD. Fact of the matter is they are all variations of DVD. HD-DVD and Blu-ray are different altogether even though players are already available that can do both.

Games development though may be a bit different. They tend to try to design games for the wider market hence the PS3 might not realise its full potential. I fear by the time that may be possible, other console makers might be already selling the next generation of consoles yet again.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against Sony as I owned a PS1, it was the greatest console then but success is NOT just about technology and being the best but rather the whole package. This time round, Sony has got it very wrong, from their pricing, marketing, PR, etc, etc. I will be very surprise if Sony even managed to beat Microsoft this round.

The interesting things i found were the proposed 'Combo discs' that contain both blu-ray and HD DVD layers. I also noted that both the formats use the exact same laser to read information. This is why i believe there isn't going to be too much of a problem with this 'war'. if different hardware were required to read a disc, then it would definitely be on. Again, i'm thinking of the +r -r war.
Also note the sales figures with reference. Although it's only early days, blu-ray has a clear percentage lead. Given this, if this war is real, then the blu ray group is in the lead according to those figures. Thats just my opinion and speculation of course and the future will certainly tell if i am right or wrong.

As with sony getting it completely wrong, well they are not scoring a lot of points on the points you mention, i totally agree with you there. The price is nearly double of what the ps2 was at launch. Granted inflation should make it more expensive, but not by nearly as much as it is. PR, well hasn't been great either has it. Reviews have been mixed, which isn't a good thing compared to the wii's for an example which have all been positive (don't think i have seen a negative review. Has anyone?) I agree with you, i'd be surprised if sony beat microsoft or nintendo. My gut feel is there will be a winner so to speak (ie, most consoles sold) but i don't think the margins will be as great as the ps2 or ps1 had over it's rivals.

I think it's too early to be predicting the death of the PS3. It may have a strong future as HDTV ownership actually starts to become common. The 360 benefitted from a head start and the PS3 has had some early bad press but I don't think we should discount the possibility of the PS3 gaining traction when things have calmed down a bit and they go head to head on performance.

In the meantime Sony still seem to be selling a boatload of PS2 and PS2 titles so a slow start with the PS3 may be mitigated a little.
