New Wii System Update Brings Storage Solution!

The new system update allows for SDHC cards to be used as up too 32Gb of additional memory.

The update adds an SD Card menu next to the options button. The SD Card Menu includes 20 pages with 12 games on each page, thats 240 games!

You can download Virtual Console and WiiWare games to it and run them from it,you cannot load save data from the SD Card it must be moved to the Wii memory first. Channels can also now be run off the SD Card, except the Nintendo Channel for some reason.

This was announced at GDC early this morning(our time) and is available for download RIGHT NOW.

and now theres a new where to download screen in the wii shop channel

FINAL EDIT: odd you cant copy the nintendo channel to the sd card but you can download it to the sd card

you have to leave the same amount of space free as the wiiware/vc game on the wii so it will work but hey go buy a 16gig sd card and use it for wiiware/vc and keep the wiis memory for saves

sentences are hard when youve been up for 16 hours

WTH? I don't get it? WiiWare/VC take up so much more room that saves?!?! So you can't download a game from the shop channel to the SD card?

YES!! Do not get this update if you use Homebrew, it will stop you being able to download any new homebrew, and may delete existing homebrew.

I'm still on frikken system 3.3 cause of this.

I wonder if Nintendo will allow a larger file-size for Wiiware games now?
Without the restriction of the Wiis small internal memory surely Wiiware games could be expanded to make better use of this new SD card feature.

You can download a game straight to the sd card, say the game is 15 blocks ok you have to make sure there are 15 blocks free in the wii memory for it too work ya dig?

You can't copy it over but you can dowload to the sd card from the shop channel :/

Yeah, with the game thing. When you download the game to the SD card inserted, it is all fine. But when you go to play it, it actually goes to the Wii console, but after you have finished playing. It goes back to the SD card. I am pretty sure that is what they meant on hackmii.

Isn't the Nintendo Channel like a spy or something? Sends info back to Nintendo about what is going on in the console? Maybe you can only download it because when it is being downloaded, it digs itself into the system..

I dunno, I don't have the Nintendo Channel anyways.

I got this and it said "Wii update failed. Check internet connection." but then I had it from my Wii menu so I just guessed the Wii was retarded. But then I went to the shop channel to redownload Nintendo channel, everybody votes channel and mii contest channel and the screen just went black after I went into shop channel. I had to pull out the cord to turn off the Wii, I tried it again and the same thing happened. I don't know what to do now. Guess I'll see if it's fixed itself tomorrow.

Hey if support for SDHC and launching from SD can be fixed in an update, now there's no reason why a future updated couldn't add support for USB flash drives or external hard drives!
