On March 14th 2009, Nintendo had unofficially shipped roughly 50 million Wii's around the world. This approximate number is currently significant as if it stands to be correct the Wii will have overtaken the Super Nintendo in lifetime sales. Throughout the decade of the 90's Nintendo had sold 49.1 million Super Nintendo's worldwide. This figure of 49.1 million is a self set milestone for Nintendo to overcome with the Wii hardware and it appears this has been achieved in a record time. Nintendo themselves have projected to sell 50.95 million Wii's by the end of their Fiscal year which ends at the completion of March 2009. That figure had also taken account of the Wii's slowing sales pace in Japan. This shows that the approximate figures of 50 million consoles shipped taken by VG Chartz is quite a safe and valid prediction. Even if VG Chartz is incorrect their figure would have to be off by 900,000 consoles for the milestone to not be broken. This seems highly unlikely. If Wii sale trends continue then Nintendo's first console the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) will be clearly in the Wii's sights. The NES had sold 61.91 million consoles in its lifetime. This will be the most significant milestone for Nintendo to break. Nintendo has not made a statement to make this news official at this point in time.

Loughi said: Face it, the Wii is boring, the Gamecube was a failure, and until nintendo hits another N64 golden era, I won't be impressed with anything they can "throw" out. Nintendo is going for money over quality and I think it's quite sad...
