15. Boom Blox
Herald as a return to form for the console puzzle genre, Boom Blox, with the assistance of Hollywood heavyweight Steven Spielberg, offered gamers a unique and enjoyable experience on the Wii.
What we said in our review
Boom Blox is one of the more surprising titles this year, and it's really great to see what is a fairly stale genre get a new lease of life.
14. Animal Crossing - Let's Go To The City
Nintendo gamers have waited for all new additions to popular franchises, and after a great introduction on the GameCube, the Animal Crossing series finally hit the Wii in 2008 after a successful appearance on the DS.
What we said in our review
Animal Crossing: Let’s Go To The City is a great title for those unfamiliar with the series. The experience is thoroughly enjoyable and practically endless. You can play with friends and create a living and vibrant lifestyle. However, if you played the first Animal Crossing to death and even remotely played the DS version, you’ll probably be disappointed in this title. It offers no major changes and doesn’t feel like a sequel. The visuals are almost the same as the GameCube version, the gameplay doesn’t change a whole much and ultimately, it’s the exact same experience as in previous titles.
13. Madden NFL 09: All-Play
EA have made a bumpy transition to the Wii, especially with their sport titles, however the Madden franchise has generally offered a solid experience that takes advantage of the Wii hardware. All-Play 09 is no exception to this, offering Wii gamers an alternative to the online-centric 360 and PS3 versions of the title.
12. Call of Duty: World at War
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare won a whole bunch of awards and owned the top spot on the XBOX Live leaderboards for months. With World at War, we don't expect it to be quite as successful, but it's still an amazing title that is worth checking out.
If you want a new FPS with a fantastic online multiplayer experience and enjoyable single-play mode with World War II elements, check out World at War.
What we said in our review
Call of Duty: World at War, surprisingly, lives up to its predecessor. It loses a few points for lack of originality and while it doesn’t have the same freshness that Call of Duty 4 had, it’s ability to throw gamers into WWII battles that haven’t yet been realised in a game is encouraging. The gameplay is amazingly solid, the audio and graphical presentation is top-notice and the multiplayer experience is just as fantastic.
11. Guitar Hero World Tour
With Guitar Hero III being such an amazing success on the console, Guitar Hero World Tour on Wii was a given. Although the title doesn't take advantage of the Wii-mote, the game offers an identical experience to the PS3, 360 and PS2 versions and even has supported online play and downloadable content.
10. Shaun White Snowboarding: Road Trip
Taking advantage of the WiiFit balance board, Road Trip is a surprisingly accessible and deep snowboarding title with nice visuals and some great and thoroughly enjoyable single-player modes.
What we said in our review
Combining this gameplay with some well designed graphics, a professional soundtrack and some good local multiplayer options makes Shaun White Snowboarding: Road Trip a pretty well rounded title. While some features from the other versions might have been appreciated (such as the ‘go anywhere’ riding), if you own a Wii with a balance board and enjoy snowboarding, you would be hard pressed not to like this game.
9. de Blob
With unique visuals, gameplay and music, De Blob is a title that has to be seen to be believed. Offering one of the most original gaming experience this generation, De Blob is a title no Wii gamer should go without playing.
What we said in our review
De Blob has simple, effective gameplay with some great looking visuals and sound effects. The controls feel naturally suited to the Wii. It has an entertaining single player storyline (complimented with some great cut scenes) and it also offers some addictive multiplayer modes. De Blob really sets a benchmark for what gamers should expect from “true” Wii games. This was the brainchild of Dutch game design and development students; so if this is a taste of what the future holds for gaming then it looks like we are headed in the right direction.
8. Wario Land: Shake Dimension
With more mini-games and a gameplay system that takes full advantage of the Wii hardware, Wario Land: Shake Dimension is a great party and single-player title.
What we said in our review
Warioland: Shake Dimension is a great title for those who have been around since the era when platforming was where it was at. Casuals and those who missed it the first time around will also find joy here. Don't expect it to challenge you too deeply. Just lean back and enjoy the visuals, and everything will be just dandy.
7. Skate It
Skate It brings EA's herald new skating franchise to the Wii, incorporating the Wii Balance Board for a realistic and deep skateboarding experience.
6. Disaster: Day of Crisis
Offering Wii gamers and third-person experience that they've missed out on so far, Disaster: Day of Crisis is a great action title that takes advantage of the hardware, plays brilliantly and offers plenty of replayability.
5. No More Heroes
One of the most original and unique titles this generation, No More Heroes - from acclaimed developer of Killer7, Suda 51 - is uncanny to say the least. The gameplay is intuitive and violent and the dialogue witty and crude. It has to be experienced to be believed.
What we said in our review
Overall if you're a gamer who's been gaming since the 1985, you're gonna love the amount of game and pop culture humor through out, and even if you're not there's still a lot of laughs to be had along the way. If you're looking for a title that isn't scared to be daring, this is the one.
4. Mario Kart Wii
After waiting for over a year, Wii gamers finally got the newest addition to one of the most cherished racers on the planet. Mario Kart Wii helped reaffirm the series atop the list of best multiplayer racers, offering the same amount of carnage and addicting gameplay that we've all come to love over the years.
What we said in our review
Mario Kart Wii brings new features that could have been added earlier, but better late than never. It's a little rough around the edges but as always, great fun!
3. Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure2
By far one of the best platforming titles this generation, Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros will go down as one of the best ever Wii titles, with its incredible depth and high accessibility.
What we said in our review
One of the most amazing Wii games out there, innovative design and game play that keeps you challenged with out being frustrating. Also an excellent new spin on and old genre. Had the game been longer, it would have scored higher. Go buy it right now. No, seriously, now.
2. Okami
So it's merely a remake of a brilliant title from last generation, but, like Resident Evil 4 on Wii, the Wii version of Okami expands on the excellence of the original by incorporating new gameplay, improved visuals and a reason to play through it all over again.
1. Super Smash Bros. Brawl
It should probably get No. 1 on hype alone, but Super Smash Bros. Brawl was worth the wait. It exceeded most gamers' expectations, offering a massive line-up of popular video-game characters and improved gameplay with implemented gameplay mechanics that have made the franchise what it is. It's not only a fighting game, it's a way of like for Wii gamers.
What we said in our review
You've got good offline and online play, enough customization that you can tweak it to your play style, insane amounts of unlockable content, mini game events, and a nicely presented adventure mode. Brawl is real value as for as content goes and it's something that will probably get scratched to death before you truly shelve it.
